Apiti is one of the two northernmost villages in Manawatu within The Iron Gates Experience. You’ll find a range of reasons to stay here: horse treks, a golf course, a local museum and an artist’s studio. The surrounding area also has destinations with their own distinctive character—from glow-worm caves to a hike to Iron Gates Gorge.

Horse Trekking and Golf in Apiti

Table Flat Trekking is based in Apiti and offers horse rides and trekking tours. Tours last between 45 minutes and three hours and cross a 600-acre sheep farm. The horses are calm and well-trained, and participants are always accompanied by an experienced guide. Table Flat Trekking also offers horse hire for larger groups with less experience.

The range of tour durations makes the time required a useful point of comparison: options range from a shorter tour to a ride or trek lasting several hours. This lets you take the activity into account alongside other plans when organising your trip, without treating the different options as if they all took the same amount of time.

The Apiti Golf Club offers a different activity: its nine-hole course is a few minutes’ drive north of Apiti Village. The horse treks have specified duration ranges, whereas the number of holes gives you a sense of what the golf course offers. This means the two local activities differ in how you can factor them into your plans.

Museum, Studio and Apiti Show

You can visit a local museum in Apiti, as well as the artist Eric Brew’s studio. Alongside the outdoor activities, these destinations offer another way to get to know the village. The annual Apiti Show takes place in February and includes a shearing competition. If you’re planning your stay around it, you can include the February event as a specific reason for your trip.

Caves and a Hike in the Surrounding Area

The Limestone Creek Glow Worm Caves are about a 20-minute drive northeast of Apiti. A stream flows through the almost triangular caves, where glow-worms can be seen at night. Check current access conditions before setting off.

Another option is the hike to Iron Gates Gorge via the Stoat Traps Track. The return walk is listed as taking about two hours. Track and access conditions can change, so check them before setting out. The two destinations appeal to different interests: in the caves, the focus is on the shaped spaces, the stream and the glow-worms at night; on the Stoat Traps Track, it’s the hike to the gorge.

The time estimates for these outings relate to different parts of the planning: the caves are about a 20-minute drive from Apiti, while the approximately two hours for the Stoat Traps Track covers the return hike. This helps you consider driving time and walking time separately, rather than comparing the figures as if they were durations of the same kind of activity.

Forest and Regional Orientation

After driving through Apiti, you can reach Ruahine State Forest in about 30 minutes or less by car. The forest provides access to tramping tracks and huts. So, alongside the individual destinations near Apiti, a larger natural area can also help guide your trip planning.

Ian McKean Pinetum is located between Rangiwahia and Apiti and is part of the Queen Elizabeth II Trust. Its location between the two places gives you a distinct geographical reference point; the pinetum is therefore separate from the visitor destinations specifically located in Apiti.

Eating in the Village

Apiti Tavern & Eatery is located at 755 Oroua Valley Road in Apiti and serves hearty fare. If you’re planning activities and visits in the village, the address is a useful point of reference. Along with the museum, studio and annual show, it rounds out the picture of local places to visit and complements outings in the surrounding area.
