Dannevirke combines local history with landscaped gardens and natural attractions. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on historical collections and culture, gardens or nature and cycling. The town’s different facets give you specific points to consider before choosing a hotel for your stay.

History and Culture in Dannevirke

The Dannevirke Gallery of History is housed in the historically significant Old Court House. It preserves archives of the town and Dannevirke district, including old photographs, equipment and other artefacts. The Gallery lists visiting hours of 10 am to 3 pm, Monday to Friday, as well as appointments by arrangement; check in advance whether these hours are current.

Completed in 1919, the Arcadia Picture Theatre is one of New Zealand’s few surviving examples from the silent film era. The Tiki 2 Gallery offers a different cultural perspective, with outdoor garden art, pounamu, paintings and custom-made pieces. At Mākirikiri Marae, visitors can admire the carvings in the Aotea Meeting House; check visiting arrangements in advance. Dannevirke’s settlers’ cemetery also attracts many visitors.

On Dannevirke’s main street, Fantasy Cave features timeless nursery rhymes and children’s stories brought to life with live animatronics and light installations. Check whether it is currently open to visitors before you go. The cultural attractions therefore differ not only in subject matter, but also in whether they focus on collections, architectural history or an immersive storytelling world.

Gardens and Grounds

Dannevirke Domain is a peaceful, 20-hectare landscaped area with attractive gardens. Features include a rose garden with a fountain, a children’s playground, bird aviaries and a wildlife park with deer. Visitors can also feed the ducks there. Alongside the gardens, the Domain offers these other features to explore.

Kohatu Country Garden features three ponds among old tōtara trees, with access via a stone bridge. Visits are by prior appointment only. Te Kiteroa Gardens is also open by prior appointment only. The large landscaped garden features perennials, trees and shrubs, as well as a pond, various structures and seating. If you plan to visit these gardens, arrange your visit in advance.

Nature and Cycling

Wahipai Reserve is a nearly five-hectare, bush-covered hillside with native and exotic trees. Access is on the northern outskirts of Dannevirke via State Highway 2, just beyond Mangatera Bridge. The reserve has a mountain bike trail of intermediate to advanced difficulty, with several small jumps and obstacles. The information about the difficulty and route helps you distinguish this trail as a sporting option from the garden and cultural attractions.

Another natural attraction, Kumeti Reserve, is 21 kilometres from Dannevirke. It is connected to Ruahine Forest Park and has a stream and a mown grassy area for a picnic or a rest. This destination adds a place specifically located outside Dannevirke where you can take a break in green surroundings; the stated 21 kilometres refers to its distance from Dannevirke.
