Waipu combines a prominent Scottish heritage with attractions for a range of interests: memorials and a museum tell stories of migration and remembrance, while walks, guided tours and markets offer further reasons to visit. You can also plan your time with specific options, from short walking tracks to longer hikes.

Scottish History and Memorials

The Nova Scotian Settlers Memorial in the centre of Waipu commemorates immigrants of Scottish descent from Nova Scotia. After arriving in Aotearoa New Zealand, they settled in Waipu and neighbouring places in the 1850s. Another notable place of remembrance is the World War One Memorial: the stone obelisk stands on a concrete base and has been the centrepiece of the annual Anzac Day commemorations for more than a century. It also commemorates those killed in the Second World War, as well as those killed and service personnel involved in later international conflicts.

The Waipu Scottish Migration Museum tells the story of 1,000 Gaelic-speaking emigrants from the western Scottish Highlands through modern interactive exhibits and artefacts. The museum’s Scottish Migration Collection is included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. If you would like to explore your family’s history in Waipu, you can carry out genealogical research at the museum by appointment. Established in 2002, the Heritage Trail leads to landmarks and buildings associated with Waipu’s early Scottish settlement.

Walks and Tours at Waipu Caves Farm Park

Waipu Caves Farm Park is a privately operated nature and recreation park. Its Jurassic Walks include tracks of varying lengths and difficulty. The easiest track is only a few hundred metres long and almost flat, while several connected tracks can take four to six hours. This is a useful distinction when planning: the short, nearly flat tracks take considerably less time than the longer connected routes.

There are also two different time options for guided tours of Milky Way Glowworm Cave: one lasts 60 minutes and the other 90 minutes. Several tours are offered daily. Jurassic Climbs include climbing and bouldering routes. Alongside the walking tracks, guided cave tours and climbing activities offer different ways to enjoy the park.

The Waipū Cycle / Walkway is a shared cycling and walking path that runs for 2.5 kilometres between Waipū Village and Riverview Place. The remaining 5.5 kilometres to Waipū Cove can be cycled on the road. The two sections therefore differ in both length and the type of route described: the first is a shared cycle and walking path, while the second follows the road.

Nature Nearby

Near Waipū, a short forest track of about ten minutes leads across the Ahuroa River to Piroa Falls. There are swimming spots along the way and at the foot of the falls. The Waipū Estuary is also a great place for wildlife watching: it is home to the critically endangered tara-iti, also known as the New Zealand fairy tern, as well as wrybills, reef herons and banded dotterels. Migratory godwits can also be seen there at certain times of year.

Waipū Cove is a nearby white-sand beach with a river, rocky outcrops and shaded lawns. Lifeguards patrol the beach in summer; patrol times may change. If you are planning a visit, check the current times in advance.

Highland Games and Markets

The Waipu Highland Games are a family-friendly Scottish gathering at Caledonian Park. The Waipu Caledonian Society has been holding them for more than 150 years. It is worth checking the event dates and programme before your trip. The Waipu Street Market is held on Saturdays or Sundays during long weekends, along Main Street and at Caledonian Park and the Celtic Barn. It features up to 100 stalls, live music, food stalls and family entertainment; check its dates before your trip too.

The Waipu Boutique Sunday Market is held at Waipu Coronation Hall and offers fresh produce and goods from local artisans. Check the date of this market before your trip as well. Together with the memorials, museum and range of walking and tour options, these markets offer a choice of experiences centred on culture, history and outdoor activities during a stay in Waipu.
