Tutukaka is a protected natural harbour and a gateway to the Poor Knights Marine Reserve and the white-sand beaches of the Tutukaka Coast. The main departure point for boat trips to the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve is at Tutukaka Marina. This makes the marina a practical landmark for travellers who want to make diving or water-based excursions the focus of their trip.

Poor Knights: Islands and Marine Reserve

The Poor Knights Islands are nearby. They are the remnants of a group of ancient volcanoes, whose shape the sea has transformed into a network of caves, tunnels and cliffs. This geological history adds a scenic dimension to the reserve: the islands are not just a name on an excursion map, but a tangible geological destination. Those interested in the area around Tutukaka can distinguish between the town’s protected natural harbour and the island group shaped by the sea. Together, these features form the geographical setting for a stay focused on marine or nature interests.

Marina and water-based activities

Four Dive! Tutukaka dive boats are based at Tutukaka Marina; the fleet may change. The operator’s day trip also departs from the marina. Fishing charters also leave from the modern marina. For planning your trip, these are different options: a day trip, diving or a fishing charter, each with its own focus. The marina also offers overnight berths; availability may change. Check the day trip’s departure times and conditions, as well as berth availability for your planned dates.

Dive training in Tutukaka

Shed 7 is located in the heart of Tutukaka. It is a modern training centre with a 3-metre-deep dive pool. Dive! Tutukaka offers a PADI Open Water beginner course with pool training and four open-water dives at the Poor Knights Islands. The course therefore combines pool training with a set number of open-water dives. The pool and open water are different training environments; the course includes both. The four dives place the open-water portion at the Poor Knights Islands. Course schedules and the use and conditions of the training centre may change; confirm dates and specific training arrangements for your preferred period directly with the operator.
