Nightcaps combines the history of coal mining with the Takitimu Heritage Trail. The town is shaped mainly by its industrial past and its role in the history of mining communities. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish local themes from broader regional themes in the wider Southland District.

Coal Mining and Local History

The Nightcaps Coal Company mined about 1.8 million tonnes of coal, mostly low-grade lignite or brown coal, from underground mines. The company operated for more than 40 years before the mines were exhausted. Nightcaps was a close-knit company town with a strong miners’ union. The town’s history therefore encompasses both underground mining and the social life of a place closely connected to the company.

The railway offers another way to explore the past. The Nightcaps Coal Company built its own railway; the Ohai Railway Board line included stops and facilities in Nightcaps. This makes it possible to explore the town’s history through its railway connections as well as its mining.

Another local highlight is the mural at Takitimu Primary School in Nightcaps. It consists of 160 faces, and every student painted at least one of them. The Takitimu Heritage Trail broadens the focus to mining communities: the self-guided route is 40 kilometres long, connects 12 historic sites, includes Nightcaps and tells the story of coal-mining communities, including Nightcaps. The mural and trail thus offer different perspectives—the students’ participation in a work of art and the historical theme of a longer route.

Other Themes in the Southland District

In the wider Southland District destination, the Hump Ridge Track offers a different way to explore the area. It is a three-day loop across subalpine heights and along a rugged coastline in southern Fiordland. On 25 October 2024, it opened as New Zealand’s 11th Great Walk. The track also includes a short interpretive loop around the historic Port Craig sawmill site. Compared with the self-guided Takitimu Heritage Trail, which tells the story of mining communities, the Hump Ridge Track combines its multi-day loop format with highland and coastal scenery.

Another distinct theme in the Southland District is Stewart Island/Rakiura. The Rakiura Track follows an open coastline, passes through the island’s forested interior and runs along the sheltered shores of Paterson Inlet. Ulva Island/Te Wharawhara is an open sanctuary with well-maintained tracks for people of all ages and fitness levels. Following a successful eradication programme, the island was declared rat-free. Its relatively unspoiled state makes it important for the conservation of threatened species. Here, nature and species conservation take centre stage, while Nightcaps is shaped mainly by its mining history and heritage trail.
