Accommodation in Winton
Winton offers several ways to shape your stay: the Heritage Trail explores the town’s history, and there are also walking routes, a library, markets and other local facilities. The topics you’d like to explore in more depth may help you plan your visit.
Winton’s history
The Winton Heritage Trail is a self-guided, 5 km route with 14 stops through Winton. The route is flat. It takes 1 to 2 hours to walk the loop, or 15 minutes by car, so your schedule will also depend on how you choose to travel the route. Historic buildings along the trail include the former post office and the former police barracks.
One stop is Winton Cemetery, where early settlers and Minnie Dean, the only woman executed in New Zealand, are buried. Holy Trinity Church is also among the town’s notable historic buildings: because of the town fires, it is one of the few surviving wooden buildings in Winton’s business centre.
The former Railway Hotel is listed as a Category II historic place. The history of hotel operations on its site dates back to the 1860s. Together with the other stops, the trail showcases different aspects of the town’s history, from former public buildings to places with personal and local significance.
Walking and recreation
For a shorter walk, consider Ivy Russell Reserve: the roughly 20-minute route passes through plantings of native trees and plants. The Winton Walkway offers a different option in terms of both time and distance. It is 7.5 km long and suitable for walking and cycling, as well as for strollers and wheelchairs.
The skate park is on John Street, next to a playground, netball courts and rugby fields. For trout fishing, the Oreti River is 3 km from Winton and is used for this purpose. Fishing conditions and regulations can vary, so it’s a good idea to check them in advance.
Markets and facilities
The Winton Community Market is held monthly at the Presbyterian Church Complex on Meldrum Street. There’s a small café and a changing selection of stalls. The market is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible, and child- and family-friendly. As the stalls on offer may change, it’s worth checking the dates before your trip.
The annual Produce & Craft Market is a separate event, organised by Winton Area Promotions for Winton’s Open Day. Check the dates and arrangements for this market before your trip, too.
Winton Library offers free e-books, e-audio and e-magazines, free membership, and free activities and learning opportunities. Winton Public Library is also home to the Vincent G. Boyle Heritage Collection, which includes works by local historian and writer Vince Boyle, as well as a selection from his private library. A genealogy collection is also available to use on site. Local genealogy researchers help visitors with family history questions on Tuesday afternoons.
The Central Southland Community Swimming Pool is a community swimming pool on the grounds of Central Southland College in Winton. If you’re planning a visit, check the current opening hours and prices in advance.
