Onekaka brings together traces of an ambitious ironworks project with golf, live music, and a seasonal hop harvest. The different timeframes are useful for planning your trip: both golf courses are open to green-fee players year-round, weather and course conditions permitting. The Mussel Inn hops, however, are harvested by hand in March; guests can take part on harvest day.

Historic Traces of the Onekaka Ironworks

The Onekaka Ironworks Wharf and Tramline Piles are listed as a Category 2 historic place. They are located at 75 Washbourn Road, Onekaka Inlet, Onekaka. The remains of Onekaka Wharf are at the end of Washbourn Road, near The Mussel Inn. As a rare reminder of the former iron mining and smelting project, they connect visitors with the history of the area.

The Onekaka Ironworks Quarries and Hydro-electric Power Scheme also tell the story of this undertaking. Built in 1922 and 1929, the scheme is of historic, technological, and archaeological significance. Its features include a ten-metre-high concrete arch dam on the Onekaka River, a 1.25-kilometre penstock, and a power station with a Boving Pelton wheel. Alongside the history of iron mining, specific engineering structures are also a focus.

The former Onekaka Ironworks transport system included a 365-metre-long pier and a 2.6-kilometre tramline from the wharf to the ironworks. These measurements give an idea of the scale of the historic transport infrastructure. Together with the wharf remains and the engineering scheme, they offer different perspectives on Onekaka’s ironworks history: as a mining and smelting project, an energy scheme, and a transport route.

Golf on Two Courses

Onekaka Links Golf Club has a total of 36 holes across the original course and the Mountain Course. Both courses are open to green-fee players year-round, weather and course conditions permitting. If you include golf in your travel plans, keep these restrictions in mind and confirm conditions before you arrive.

Groups of four or six players must book two weeks in advance. This lead time allows the course to be prepared and a course guide to be arranged. This deadline is especially relevant if your group wants to make a round of golf a fixed part of your stay.

The grounds are closely connected with nature. You may spot wildlife such as seals or penguins while playing. A sighting is possible, not guaranteed; it adds a nature experience to the golf course, but does not mean that any particular animal will be seen.

The Mussel Inn: Music and Hops

The Mussel Inn in Onekaka is a café, bar, and music venue. It regularly hosts live music and events featuring local and international artists. If you want to plan your trip around a performance, check the specific event dates before making your plans.

The Mussel Inn brewery grows an old hop variety that it calls “Onekaka.” The hops are harvested by hand in March, and guests can take part on harvest day. If you are travelling specifically for this opportunity, confirm seasonal participation before your trip. This makes it easier to account for the difference between a golf stay that is possible year-round under the conditions noted above and an experience tied to a particular harvest day when choosing your dates.

Boat Launching and Tides

The Tasman District Council lists Onekaka as a location with a boat ramp or beach launching site. Because of significant tidal influences, access may depend on high tide and local knowledge. If you plan to launch a boat, these conditions are important factors to consider in your preparations.
