Kikiwa lies in the upper Motupiko Valley and is linked to a historic route that connected different trails across the region. Nearby, there are also hiking and mountain biking trails. The information below will help you distinguish the historic routes from present-day outings in the area and understand their respective time and difficulty details.

Historic routes near Kikiwa

At Kikiwa, the historic Nelson Route connected with the Motueka Route, which in turn connected with the Wairau Route. From Kikiwa, the historic route ran upstream along the Motupiko and then continued to Lake Rotoiti. The documented route therefore covers both the connection between the routes at Kikiwa and the further course along the river to the lake.

Hiking and accommodation nearby

Allow four to six hours for the Beebys Knob–Red Hills circuit via Maitland Ridge. There is a car park at SH63 and another on Tophouse Road at the start of the nearby Beebys Knob–Red Hills Track. Check current track conditions before setting out.

Nearby Beeby’s Knob is 1,442 metres high. The return trip to the summit is suitable as a half-day outing on foot or by mountain bike. The car park for the Beeby’s Knob track is on Korere-Tophouse Road, 6.9 kilometres south of Kikiwa. You can also stay overnight at Beebys Hut.

Beebys Hut is a standard six-bunk hut in the Nelson Lakes area. You can reach the hut on foot or by mountain bike; access by 4WD vehicle is no longer available. For walkers, the Beebys Track leads from Korere-Tophouse Road to the hut, while mountain bikers can use the track from Tophouse Road. Check access and accommodation options before setting out.

The scenery also changes along the trails: nearby Beebys Ridge is mostly covered in beech forest. On the ridge, the forest opens into tussock grassland at the hut site. Along the ridge at Beeby’s Knob, the route passes through open tussock grassland and alpine herbs.

In the nearby Beebys area, part of the trail follows the Te Araroa Trail; hiking and mountain biking are popular activities there. The routes vary in character: Maitland Ridge Track is a narrow, technically challenging singletrack for experts, with some steep descents. It passes through beech forest and across clearings with views of the Rainbow and Wairau valleys.
