Moana is located on the northern shore of Lake Brunner. Its lakeside setting offers panoramic views of Lake Brunner, the surrounding hills and the snow-capped mountains beyond. The lake, trails and railway heritage give a stay in Moana a variety of focuses. If you are considering Moana as a destination, you can choose between viewpoints, lakeside trails, history and activities on the water. The Grey District’s Lake Brunner and Moana areas are home to diverse birdlife, as well as wetlands and rainforest ecosystems.

Walks and trails

The Velenski Walk begins at the western end of the Moana settlement. It is described as an easy 20-minute walk, 600 metres each way. From the viewpoint, you can look across the lake to the Orangipuku Valley, as well as Mt Te Kinga and the Hohonu Range. The distance is explicitly given as one way.

The Rakaitane Track starts at the lakeside car park on Ahau Street, behind the motor camp at Moana’s western end. It leads to a suspension bridge over the Arnold River and offers panoramic views. The differences between the trails are clear: the Velenski Walk’s easy grading, walking time and viewpoint provide useful guidance; the Rakaitane Track is defined by the river and suspension bridge.

The Lake Brunner Scenic Trail runs along the northwestern shore of the lake and leads to picnic areas and swimming beaches. It is open to walkers and cyclists. Unlike the Velenski Walk, with its viewpoint, this trail has a different focus: the lakeside route and destinations along the lake provide the points of reference. Check trail conditions and local trail notices before setting out.

Railway heritage on the lakeshore

Moana Railway Station is located on the shore of Lake Brunner. It is the only surviving Type A station in New Zealand with its associated tracks and goods shed. The station is classified as a Historic Place Category 1 and is privately owned. For travellers interested in railway history as well as the landscape, it is a clear cultural point of interest. Moana’s lakeside landscape and preserved railway heritage can thus be seen as two distinct aspects of the place.

Water activities

The calm waters near Moana are suitable for swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and water skiing. A boat ramp provides access to Lake Brunner by motorboat, yacht or sightseeing charter. The availability of specific operators may vary; check before planning a boat trip. For anglers, Moana Trout Fishing Safari offers guided trips on lakes, rivers and streams. These include fly fishing, spin fishing and trolling for wild brown trout. Check booking details and the applicable fishing rules and conditions before taking part.
