Whataroa: Kōtuku, River and Alpine Landscapes
Accommodation in Whataroa
Whataroa brings together nature watching, river landscapes and guided excursions.
Kōtuku and rainforest in Waitangiroto Nature Reserve
The White Heron Sanctuary Tour starts in Whataroa with a scenic and informative minivan ride through privately managed farmland and wetlands to the protected Waitangiroto Nature Reserve. There, the tour offers the chance to observe rare Kōtuku in the wild. You can also see behaviours characteristic of New Zealand’s only Kōtuku breeding site, which occur nowhere else in the country. Wildlife viewing is seasonal, so plan your tour accordingly.
Access to the protected reserve and Kōtuku nesting site is available only as part of a land-based guided tour with White Heron Sanctuary Tours in Whataroa. Permission is granted by the Department of Conservation. As access and operating arrangements may change, check the tour conditions before your visit.
Another way to experience the rainforest is the Waitangiroto Nature Reserve Rainforest Nature Tour, which includes an exclusive guided walk along a purpose-built track through temperate lowland podocarp rainforest. Royal spoonbills also nest high in the canopy of kahikatea trees in the reserve, above and near the Kōtuku nesting site. The rainforest tour is available seasonally.
River landscapes, the Alpine Fault and walks
The Whataroa River is one of New Zealand’s best one-day white-water experiences. Its deep green water flows through three spectacular canyon gorges. The river combines striking scenery with a white-water experience distinct from the guided nature-watching tours in the reserve.
Whataroa is also home to an exposed section of the Alpine Fault, which can be visited on guided tours. If you’d rather pair the river with recreational activities on a lake, Lake Wahapo is near Whataroa, where you can fish for trout and go boating.
Nearby, the Waitangitāhuna Wetland Walk is an easy track through regenerating kahikatea forest and lowland areas with New Zealand flax, leading to a viewing platform overlooking the Southern Alps, Kā Tiritiri o te Moana. The destination combines wetland scenery with expansive mountain views.
The walk’s starting point is about 9 km from Whataroa along Whataroa Flat Road. From there, a gravel road crosses the Waitangitāhuna River to the starting point, opposite the White Heron Tours landing. The approximate distance and the road route that follows can help you fit the trip into your day’s plans.
