Ha'apai brings together volcanic landscapes, archaeological traces, historical landmarks, and water activities.

Island Group and Volcanoes

The wider travel destination of Tonga has four main island groups; Ha'apai is the central group. It consists of 62 scattered islands, atolls, reefs, and shoals. Ha'apai therefore encompasses more than just individual islands: reefs and shoals are also part of its geographical landscape. In the wider travel destination of Tonga, low-lying coral atolls and sandy beaches are also part of the landscape. Alongside Ha'apai's volcanoes, reefs, and shoals, they illustrate the country's varied scenery.

Kao is part of Ha'apai's volcanic chain. At 1,046 metres, Kao is the highest point in the Kingdom of Tonga. Tofua is an active volcano in Ha'apai. The two names represent different landscape features: Kao for its elevation and Tofua for its volcanic activity.

Archaeological Traces and History

Traces of Lapita settlements dating to around 1500 BC have been found in Ha'apai. Ancient rock carvings, known as petroglyphs, have also been discovered there. These archaeological clues complement the historical milestones associated with seafarers and events on the islands.

In 1643, Abel Tasman became the first European to visit Ha'apai. Captain James Cook made several stops on the islands of Ha'apai in 1774 and 1777 and named them the Friendly Islands. A later event took place off Lifuka: in 1806, the crew of the Port-au-Prince was attacked by Tongan warriors off the island; most of the crew members were killed. Captain William Bligh of the Bounty also visited the volcanic island of Tofua.

In Pangai, the Mystery Cross is a spiritual landmark. Pangai Market is also known as Fanga ‘i he Si Market. You may come across both names when learning about the named places and their history.

Water Activities and Beaches

There are several ways to enjoy the water: kayaks and paddleboards can be rented to explore the waters around the islands. Kitesurfing is available in Ha'apai. Snorkelling and diving on the coral reefs around Ha'apai are offered by local operators. Island-hopping tours explore the many small islands and islets. When planning your trip, you can choose between paddling, kitesurfing, reef activities, and excursions to other islands.

Horse riding on the beaches is another activity on offer. Whale watching is seasonal: guided tours are available during the humpback whale migration from July to October. If you would like to plan such a tour, check the latest information from operators for your travel year.
