Tongatapu combines striking natural formations with a layered history. On the eastern side, in Haveluliku, lies ʻAnahulu Cave, a network of large limestone caves with Tongatapu’s only freshwater pools. On the southwestern side, Mapu ‘a Vaea’s blowholes are formed in the coral reef; on the southeastern side, Hufangalupe is a natural land bridge. The caves, reef and land bridge each give the island its own distinctive natural features.

Royal History in Mu’a and Lapaha

Mu’a in eastern Tongatapu was the site of the third capital of ancient Tonga. This capital stood there from around the 13th to the 19th century. Lapaha lies northeast of Mu’a. According to tradition, Lapaha was the permanent residence and seat of power of the Tu’i Tonga. An estimated 22 ancient royal tombs, known as langi, are located there. The Ancient Royal Tombs in Lapaha are one of two archaeological sites in the World Heritage property “The Ancient Capitals of the Kingdom of Tonga,” proposed for UNESCO’s Tentative List.

Another historic site is on the shore of Nuku’alofa: the Royal Palace. Tongatapu also has landing sites associated with Abel Tasman and Captain James Cook. Mu’a and Lapaha thus represent the history of former political centres, while the landing sites mark other historical connections to the island.

Diving, Whales and Cultural Activities

Diving around Tongatapu offers experiences that include sunken wrecks and colourful coral reefs. Swimming with whales is also one of the possible water-based adventures on Tongatapu. The general whale-watching season in Tongan waters runs from July to October; in Tongatapu and ʻEua, the whale season lasts a little longer than in other parts of Tonga. If you want to plan your trip around whale season, this general period provides a seasonal guide.

Cultural activities can also be part of your planning: Ancient Tonga offers special courses in ngatu (tapa cloth) and weaving. Check with the provider for current availability.

Tonga Beyond Tongatapu

Tonga is divided into four main island groups. If you are considering other destinations in the country, the different landscapes can help guide your choice: the northern Vava’u group comprises 61 islands with coral gardens, deserted beaches and clear lagoons. The central island group of Ha’apai consists of 62 scattered islands, atolls, reefs and shoals. The commercial flight between Tongatapu and ʻEua is listed as taking seven minutes. Culinary Traditions in Tonga

Tonga’s cultural traditions can also inspire your travel plans. A Tongan feast may include up to 30 different dishes served on a pola, a long tray made of woven coconut fronds. Typical dishes include suckling pig, crayfish, chicken, octopus and pork, as well as vegetables cooked in an umu, an underground oven, and various tropical fruits. A cultural dinner show is also recommended as an experience in Tonga.
