The Pitcairn Islands bring together nature and history across several different islands. Henderson Island is part of the Pitcairn Islands Group; Down Rope, St. Paul's Pool, the Pitcairn Museum, the graves near Town Square and the guided quad-bike tours are all on Pitcairn. This distinction helps you separate your travel interests geographically, rather than treating all the sites as points on the same island. The Mata ki te Rangi (Eyes to the Sky) International Dark Sky Sanctuary encompasses all four islands in the group. Together, they have a land area of 43.25 km². The sanctuary status therefore applies to the island group as a whole, while each of the cultural and natural sites below is associated with a specific island.

Henderson Island: World Heritage with permit requirements

Henderson Island, part of the Pitcairn Islands Group, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Access requires a permit issued by the Governor after consultation with the Island Council. Check the current permit rules before travelling. For your planning, keep two points separate: the historic UNESCO designation and the permit required for access.

Coastal scenery and marine life on Pitcairn

At Down Rope on Pitcairn, a sandy beach and ancient Polynesian petroglyphs lie at the foot of a cliff about 700 feet high. Petroglyphs are rock carvings; the ancient Polynesian markings give the site a specific connection to the island's history as well as its coastal scenery. St. Paul's Pool offers a different focus: this sea-formed tidal pool has clear water and diverse marine life. Down Rope brings together a beach, a cliff and petroglyphs, while the pool and its marine life are the main attractions at St. Paul's Pool.

Traces of the Bounty mutiny and Pitcairn's history

A short walk from Town Square leads to the grave of Bounty mutineer John Adams, as well as the graves of his wife and daughter. For travellers interested in the history of the Bounty, the burial site links a named individual with the resting places of his family. Highlights of the Pitcairn Museum's collection include a Bounty cannon recovered from Bounty Bay, naval artefacts and historical Pitcairn memorabilia. The two historical themes are distinct: the grave focuses on Adams and his family, while the collection features the Bounty cannon and naval and local memorabilia.

Guided quad-bike tours

Pitkern Islen Enterprises offers guided quad-bike tours on Pitcairn. If a tour like this is important to your travel plans, confirm availability directly with the provider.

When looking for a hotel for your trip to the Pitcairn Islands, checking which island each site is on is a useful first step: Henderson's UNESCO World Heritage Site requires a permit, while the natural and cultural sites mentioned here, as well as the quad-bike tours, are on Pitcairn. Consider which of these travel interests matter most to you and take Henderson's separate access requirements into account before finalising your plans.
