Ludwików and its wider surroundings bring together several distinct features: the history of a glassworks, residential buildings for employees of the Przygodzice estates, the former Kociemba manor farm, and pedunculate oaks along the Litwin. These features are not all in the same place. The glassworks shaped Ludwików from 1826 to 1870; the residential buildings for employees date from the early 20th century. The houses stand north of Ludwików, the former Kociemba manor farm lies in the wider northeastern area, and the pedunculate oaks grow mainly along the Litwin.

Glassworks and local history

A glassworks founded by Ludwik Mittelstädt operated in Ludwików from 1826 to 1870. The name of the village is said to derive from his name. The glassworks closed in 1870; the residential buildings for employees date from the early 20th century and therefore belong to a later phase of the village’s history.

Residential buildings for employees

North of Ludwików, on the left-hand side of the road to Dębnica, stand single-storey residential buildings for employees of the Przygodzice estates. They date from the early 20th century and are known as sześciorak and ośmiorak. Their purpose draws attention to an aspect different from that of the glassworks: here, the focus is on residential buildings connected with work on the estates. Their location north of the village and their connection to the road to Dębnica help pinpoint these houses. If you are interested in social and settlement history, they offer a distinct perspective on local history, alongside the story of the former glassworks.

The former Kociemba manor farm

In the wider area northeast of Ludwików, beyond the Kocięba ponds and the Litwin stream, lies the former Kociemba manor farm. Its buildings, dating from the second half of the 19th century, are made of brick and bog iron. The manor farm includes the steward’s house, a former workers’ house, and a former stable building. The steward’s house was used for administration, the workers’ house provided accommodation for workers, and the stable building was used as a stable. Today, the former steward’s house is a residence; the former stable building is partly used as a residence.

Landscape and orientation

Monumental pedunculate oaks grow in the wider surroundings of Ludwików, mainly along the Litwin stream. This landscape feature sits alongside the historic buildings and is primarily associated with the course of the stream. A post dated March 20, 2024, reported the establishment of a rest stop for cyclists in the center of Ludwików, next to the village community center.

The glassworks operated from 1826 to 1870; the manor farm buildings date from the second half of the 19th century, while the residential buildings date from the early 20th century.
