Graudenz between the Vistula riverbank, granaries and fortress history
Accommodation in Graudenz
As you approach Graudenz, the 1,098-metre road and railway bridge catches the eye. The city lies on one of the highest banks of the Vistula; the difference in elevation is more than 30 metres. The grain granaries are built into the slope. In Graudenz, the riverside setting and historic buildings are therefore directly connected: the landscape is both part of the cityscape and a trading motif that can be found at several sights.
Vistula riverbank and granaries
The first brick grain granaries in Grudziądz were built in the 14th century. The Muzeum Handlu Wiślanego is located in the historic granaries at 33 and 35 Spichrzowa Street; the buildings were renovated between 2020 and 2021. The museum presents the Vistula route through Grudziądz as a trade route. This allows the subject to be viewed from two angles: the granaries shape the built landscape on the slope, while the exhibition explores the river route as a trade connection.
The archaeological exhibitions cover a different period. They display grave goods from cemeteries and settlements dating from the period of Roman influence. Material from the area around Grudziądz spans the period from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD. This early dating sits alongside the medieval history of the brick granaries and offers another way to explore the region’s past.
Gates, walls and fortress
Brama Wodna was built at the beginning of the 14th century and incorporated into the city wall of Grudziądz. The medieval city walls had five gates and ten towers in total. In the Twierdza Grudziądz fortress complex, the citadel forms the main section. Together, these features illustrate different scales of fortification: the individual gate, the city wall with its towers, and the main section of the fortress complex.
Pałac Opatek also tells of an earlier function of the site: it was the gatehouse of the Benedictine nuns’ order. For an overview of the history of the buildings, this offers a range of different themes—from the city’s fortifications to a building that once marked the entrance to a monastery.
Visiting hours for the tower and museum
Góra Zamkowa and Wieża „Klimek” tower are open free of charge and without prior registration. From November to February, they are open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; in March and October, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm; and from April to September, from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. Check the hours before your visit, as seasonal opening times may change.
The Muzeum im. ks. dr. Władysława Łęgi in Grudziądz and its branch, the Muzeum Handlu Wiślanego, are open Tuesday to Sunday. Special holiday exceptions apply in 2026; take these into account when planning a holiday visit.
Park Miejski as a distinctive feature
Park Miejski is designated as a natural and landscape complex. Its revitalisation included restoring the former rose garden, the former rosarium. There is also a playground and military exhibits: a T-34 tank from the Second World War, anti-tank guns and an aircraft. The park thus brings together different themes—the designated natural and landscape area, the restored garden and the military exhibits. This sets it apart in character from the city’s medieval gates and fortifications.
