Accommodation in Gniewkowo
A preserved historic urban layout gives Gniewkowo a clear focal point: a rectangular market square lies at its center. The shape of the square is thus part of the town’s inherited layout, not merely a feature in its own right. Together with the monuments and the church, it offers a way into the history of the place. The town’s layout, commemorative landmarks and sacred furnishings each emphasize different aspects.
Market Square, Monument and Mural
A monument to Władysław Biały was erected in the market square in 2011. It was created by Marek Guczalski, an artist from Bydgoszcz. Its location and year of creation help place the work in the context of Gniewkowo’s historic center: the square is the focal point of the preserved layout and also the site of this monument. For art enthusiasts, its dedication, year and creator are specific points of reference when viewing it.
Another work was created in Gniewkowo to mark the 750th anniversary of the town: a new mural. The two works have different associations. The monument is dedicated to Władysław Biały; the town’s anniversary was the occasion for the mural. This makes it possible to distinguish a monument dedicated to an individual from a work created for an anniversary, rather than grouping both under a single historical theme.
The Church and Its Historic Furnishings
The Church of St. Nicholas and St. Constancia was built in the Gothic style at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. Its construction therefore predates the creation of the individually named furnishings by a considerable margin. Visitors interested in architecture and art can first identify the church as a Gothic building, then consider the altars and the reliquary cross as a distinct historical layer.
The furnishings include a Mannerist altar dedicated to St. Constancia from the first half of the 17th century and a Baroque altar of St. Anne with the Virgin and Child from the second half of that century. A reliquary cross also dates from the second half of the 17th century. These are joined by a Regency-style high altar depicting Christ crucified, dating from the second quarter of the 18th century, and a Rococo altar dedicated to St. Nicholas from the second half of that century.
The furnishings, then, do not all belong to a single period. Within the 17th century, a Mannerist altar from the first half stands alongside Baroque works from the second half. In the 18th century, the Regency-style high altar is dated earlier than the Rococo altar. This chronological and stylistic sequence makes the furnishings more than a list of objects: it reflects distinct, specifically named artistic styles and periods of creation within the same church.
Gniewkowo as a Travel Destination
Gniewkowo lies on the Piast Trail (Szlak Piastowski). This adds an explicitly named connection to the trail to the historical associations found in the town center and the church. When looking for a hotel for a trip to Gniewkowo, you can decide which interests matter most to you: the historic urban layout, church art or the Piast Trail.
