Medieval religious buildings, named trails and lakes come together around Radziejów. The wider Radziejów County travel area offers further natural and cultural attractions. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between places in Radziejów, its immediate surroundings and the attractions of the region.

Churches, a Monastery and Trails

In 1331, Władysław Łokietek had the Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross and a Franciscan monastery built in Radziejów. Also in 1331, the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary was built at its current location; its foundation is attributed to Jan Grot, Bishop of Kraków. The two churches therefore share the same founding year, but have different founders and histories.

A Gothic church portal and traces of pointed-arch windows in the south wall of the presbytery have been preserved at the Franciscan complex. The monastery complex is considered one of the few examples of its kind in the small urban centres of eastern Kuyavia. On 14 September 2014, the Franciscan church was elevated to the status of a sanctuary of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

The Piast Trail runs through Radziejów County. One section passes through the OPPT area and connects the battlefield site near Płowce with the religious buildings in Radziejów. The trail is named after Piast Kołodziej, considered the ancestor of Poland’s first dynasty. Another named trail is the “Bitwy pod Płowcami” walking trail: it passes through the OPPT area and connects Radziejów with Osięciny. As trail maintenance may change, check its current condition before setting out.

Events and Historical Connections

The “Jarmark Królewski” is held in Radziejów in August. The programme includes demonstrations of knightly combat and an evening procession of armed retinues. The “Radziejowskie Sejmiki Szlacheckie” also take place there in June. They draw on the Kuyavian voivodeship assemblies held in Radziejów from 1515 to 1793, including at the Franciscan monastery.

A reenactment of the Battle of Płowce is held every year in Radziejów County. The battle itself was fought in the area around Radziejów on 27 September 1331, during the Polish–Teutonic War. If you are planning a trip to an event, it is advisable to check the specific dates in advance.

Lakes and Waterways

Lake Głuszyńskie is a glacial ribbon lake that stretches from north to south; the Zgłowiączka River flows through it. The lake is home to numerous birds, including gulls, ducks and geese. Since 16 June 1983, it has been protected as the “Jezioro Głuszyńskie” landscape protection area; it also lies within a noise protection zone.

The smaller, shallow Lake Świeskie has the character of a natural pond and is intensively used for fish farming. Lake Świeskie is also part of the “Jezioro Głuszyńskie” landscape protection area.

A Place to Visit in Radziejów

The “Plusk” indoor swimming pool is located at 58 Kościuszki Street in Radziejów, by the Mechanical School. The facility includes a leisure pool with geysers and water massages, a children’s pool with an elephant slide and a water mushroom, and a 53-metre-long water slide. If you are planning a visit, check access arrangements in advance.

Beyond the Town: Radziejów County

The wider travel area also includes the natural landscape around Lake Gopło, where an ornithological reserve is located. In Radziejów County, Nadgoplański Park Tysiąclecia is both a nature reserve and a landscape park. The county’s places on the eastern shore of Lake Gopło include Połajewo, Przewóz, Byszewo and Połajewko; Połajewo is considered a popular holiday destination in the region.

Associated with Lake Świeskie is a complex of meadow and marsh vegetation known as the “Lake Świeskie Channel Complex.” Regional cuisine also has a named connection: Kujawiok is a traditional Easter yeast cake from Radziejów County and is one of the region’s traditional food products. The regional context thus extends from protected areas and waterways to culinary traditions.
