Tymień: History, Cultural Traces and Natural Connections
Accommodation in Tymień
Tymień brings together a range of historical and landscape-related themes. The village’s founding provides an early point of reference; the cemetery and wayside figure represent later periods. A knight’s sword and archaeological finds broaden the picture of the history of the village and its immediate surroundings. The Jezioro Modzerowskie Protected Landscape Area is listed for Tymień; several lakes in the region together form the source area of the Noteć.
Founding and local history
Tymień was founded in 1770 as part of the German settlement of the Kujawy Lake District. This places the village’s origins in a specific historical context of settlement. This date is a distinct starting point for an overview of local themes: it refers to the founding of Tymień, not to the dating of later cultural heritage.
Cemetery and wayside figure
The Protestant cemetery in Tymień dates from the late 19th century and is listed in the heritage register. A wayside figure of the Virgin Mary is also located in the village; it dates from the second half of the 20th century. The two landmarks represent different periods and different forms of religious remembrance: a cemetery and a wayside figure. Those interested in Tymień’s cultural traces can therefore consider these places in terms of their respective dates and forms.
The knight’s sword from Tymień
A 14th-century knight’s sword was found in the village of Tymień. It is part of the exhibition “Dzieje Włocławka i regionu od pradziejów do PRL” at the Muzeum Ziemi Kujawskiej i Dobrzyńskiej. The sword was donated to the Muzeum Ziemi Kujawskiej i Dobrzyńskiej and displayed at the Muzeum Historii Włocławka, ul. Szpichlerna 19. The object’s history thus leads from its discovery in Tymień to its museum presentation in Włocławek. To understand the geography, it helps to distinguish the findspot from the exhibition venue: the sword was found in Tymień, while the museums mentioned are in Włocławek.
Burial mounds and archaeological finds
Five passage grave culture burial mounds without chambers are associated with the surrounding area. Their precise location is unknown; the findspot is placed approximately four kilometres southeast of Izbica Kujawska. The burial mounds were associated with numerous pottery fragments, a polished stone, a flint axe and a flint fragment. The knight’s sword, by contrast, was found in the village of Tymień.
Nature conservation and waterways
As of 30 June 2017, two forms of nature protection were recorded for Tymień. The Jezioro Modzerowskie Protected Landscape Area is among the protected areas listed for the village. The broader hydrographic context is distinct from this: Jezioro Modzerowskie and Jezioro Długie are ribbon lakes. Together with nearby Jezioro Brdowskie, which is in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, they form the source area of the Noteć River. Thus, a protected area listed for Tymień and a regional lake landscape sit alongside one another.
