Bochnia and Bochnia County: Salt, Wood and Nature
Accommodation in Bochnia
The Bochnia Salt Mine is one of two World Heritage sites in Bochnia County. In Lesser Poland, it also represents a long mining history: it is Poland’s oldest rock salt mine and one of Europe’s oldest industrial sites. Bochnia County also offers other points of interest to help you plan your trip: wooden churches, regional customs and forest landscapes. For your stay in Bochnia, you can first consider whether you would like to focus on history, church art, tradition or outdoor activities.
Salt mine, route and architecture
One specific historical connection is the Via Regia Antiqua route. It runs from Bochnia, the county seat, to the village of Chełm, passing through Bochnia County. The route includes, among other places, the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Łapczyca, dating from 1340. The Kmita and Lubomirski Castle in Stary Wiśnicz offers a different architectural focus: it is one of Poland’s most significant examples of early Baroque representative defensive architecture. A route with named endpoints and a castle representing a particular architectural style thus stand side by side as distinct historical themes.
The wooden churches and other wooden buildings of Bochnia County are also part of the Wooden Architecture Trail of the Małopolska Region. This links individual buildings to a regional route without overshadowing the significance of each one.
Wooden churches, visual art and traditions
The Church of St Leonard in Lipnica Murowana is one of the oldest and best-preserved Gothic wooden churches. Inside, the paintings range from Gothic stencil motifs to Baroque picture cycles dating from 1711. The main altar was made in a Kraków workshop in the early 16th century; together, the altar and paintings bring different art-historical periods into view.
Another religious destination is the Sanctuary of St Simon of Lipnica and the Ledóchowski Sisters in Lipnica Murowana, the only sanctuary of St Simon of Lipnica in Poland. Visits are guided; organised groups must book an appointment in advance. Check arrangements before visiting as a group, since visiting procedures may change.
The Palm Sunday Competition in Lipnica Murowana has been held without interruption since 1958. The Biesiada Agroturystyczna in Siedlec has been held since 1998 and is designated a local product in the category of cultural and educational initiatives. Check the current dates for the Biesiada before adding it to your plans. Lipnicka lipina is also part of the local culinary tradition: a traditional drink made from linden blossoms that has been consumed in the Lipnica Murowana area for a long time.
Forest landscapes and outdoor activities
Nowy Wiśnicz lies entirely within Wiśnicko-Lipnicki Landscape Park. There, the Bukowiec forest complex is a 92-hectare nature reserve with sandstone rock formations. The largest forest area in Bochnia County is located along the southern edge of the Niepołomice Heath. The heath’s flat terrain is suitable for walks and for outings on inline skates or by bicycle.
These nature destinations differ in specific ways: sandstone formations and the nature reserve define Bukowiec, while the Niepołomice Heath offers flat terrain for several of the activities mentioned. This comparison can help you decide whether to focus your trip on observing nature or getting active outdoors.
