Brzesko and the Brzesko area offer a range of things to explore, from architectural history and religious art to local collections and landscapes. When looking for hotels in Brzesko, you can start by considering which of these themes you would like to shape your stay. The places differ not only in their history but also in their character, from the town hall and museum to the Bocheniec ridge and signposted trails.

Architectural history and collections in Brzesko

Brzesko’s Market Square is home to the town hall, an eclectic building with a four-storey tower. It was built between 1909 and 1910. Eclectic architecture combines design elements from different styles, making the town hall a striking landmark for anyone interested in the city’s architectural history. The Jewish cemetery in Brzesko is also part of the city’s historic character: it was entered in the heritage register in 1992.

The Regional Museum offers another way to explore the city’s history. Its collection includes two bourgeois interiors, landscapes, portraits and locally significant historical memorabilia. The interiors sit alongside artworks and objects connected to local history, so the museum’s collection covers domestic, artistic and commemorative themes.

The city’s industrial heritage is reflected in the urban and architectural complex of the Brzesko–Okocim Brewery. It includes the brewery, the surrounding buildings and the adjacent palace and park complex of the Goetz-Okocimski family. Development of the complex began in 1845 and continued into the 1930s. The palace itself was built between 1898 and 1900 in the neo-Baroque and neo-Rococo styles. This date refers to the palace, not to the entire complex.

The park can also be viewed as a distinct part of this architectural and landscape history: an English landscape park dating from 1900 surrounds the palace in Okocim. Native and exotic trees and shrubs grow there. Visitors interested in historic estates can distinguish the palace’s architecture from the design of the surrounding park without assuming that both date from the same period.

Bocheniec: ridge and historic traces

At 394 metres above sea level, Bocheniec is the highest elevation in the Brzesko area. The eastern rampart remains of a Wiślan hillfort dating from the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries have survived there. The rampart is about four metres high and 18 metres wide at its base. These measurements give an idea of the surviving structure without implying anything about its former extent.

A 25-metre-high, six-storey observation tower opened on Bocheniec in October 2023. Check the current access conditions before your visit. The Church of St Anne, dating from 1596, also stands on Bocheniec. The ridge thus preserves historic traces from different periods: the early medieval rampart remains and the church from the late 16th century.

Trails and stops in the municipality

Two different options should be considered when planning your routes. The Via Regia pilgrimage route runs from Brzesko through Jasień Brzeski and Brzeźnica to Bochnia. Szlak wokół Brzeska is a signposted hiking trail. These descriptions refer to different types of routes and can help you choose what to focus on when planning; they do not indicate a walking time or difficulty level.

Szczepanów also brings together several historical themes. On 6 September 2003, Pope John Paul II elevated the parish church there to the rank of minor basilica. A late-15th-century triptych is located in the south side chapel of the old church building. The Pantheon of Saints in Szczepanów is also a stop on the discovery route through the Brzesko municipality.

Other stops on this route include the “Romeo i Julia” natural monument in Mokrzyska and the Pavimentum Copernicanum in Brzesko. The selection ranges from religious and cultural-historical sites to a natural monument. When planning, you can choose stops according to your interests rather than treating them as a single themed sequence. This leaves room to give buildings, collections, landscapes and trails the emphasis that best suits your interests.
