Discover Korzkiew: Castle, fortified church and landscape
Accommodation in Korzkiew
Korzkiew brings together a fortified church, the restored ruins of a castle and a landscape park set in a distinctive valley and hill landscape. For planning your trip, this means architectural history, sacred art and scenery side by side; a blue trail adds a link towards the Prądnik Valley and Ojców to the local highlights. If you are looking for a hotel in Korzkiew, you can plan your stay around these specific highlights: the castle, the church, the park or the trail connection.
Castle and church
The oldest part of Korzkiew Castle dates from the second half of the 14th century. In the time of Casimir the Great, the castle was part of a border defence system. The age of the oldest structure and its role in the defence system shed light on two different aspects of the castle’s history: its historical period and its role at the time. Today, the restored ruins crown a striking promontory surrounded by a bend in the Korzkiewka. Alongside the remains of the walls, the hill and the course of the river also shape the castle’s distinctive appearance.
The Church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist was completed in 1630. Its defensive character is evident in its position on a hill, its compact form and its massive, reinforced walls. Many of its loopholes are now bricked up. Its location, form and architectural details together define the building’s defensive character.
The furnishings also reflect different periods. The main altar houses two wooden reliquaries from the 17th century. Both are polychrome-painted and gilded; one is shaped like a woman’s head and the other like a man’s. The church also contains a Gothic reliquary shrine from the 14th century. The Gothic shrine and the later, head-shaped reliquaries thus represent different periods of origin. The church’s completion in 1630 provides a separate historical point of reference.
Park and landscape
At the foot of the castle hill lies a landscape park, established in 1820 and covering approximately 6 ha. Its location creates a direct spatial connection to the castle hill. The year it was established and its approximate area also give the park its own distinct character within the local landscape.
Korzkiew lies in the valley of the Korzkiewka stream, a left-bank tributary of the Prądnik. The area’s varied relief was formed by erosion and karst processes. The valley and landforms broaden the view beyond the castle hill: Korzkiew is also shaped by the course of the stream and its varied terrain. Together with the castle on the promontory and the park at the foot of the hill, they reveal the interplay between buildings and landscape.
Route towards Ojców
A blue trail leads from Korzkiew into the Prądnik Valley near Prądnik Korzkiewski and continues to Ojców (6 km). For planning your trip, this offers a different perspective from the local history: the trail connects Korzkiew with the Prądnik Valley and Ojców, while the castle and church form the historical highlights of the village. When planning a hotel stay, you can decide whether you would like to explore Korzkiew mainly through its architectural and artistic history or also via the route to Ojców. The park and terrain add the local landscape to both perspectives.
