Skawina between cultural history and cycling routes
Accommodation in Skawina
When looking for hotels in Skawina, your interests can help determine where to stay: a museum and architectural history, a concert at the Pałacyk “Sokół,” or time spent on a paved route each offer a different focus. The following topics will help you get to know Skawina before choosing your hotel.
Museum, architectural history and concerts
The Muzeum Regionalne in Skawina welcomes visitors to its museum exhibitions. They focus on the history and folk-cultural heritage of the surrounding area. The museum therefore offers two closely connected perspectives: historical development and cultural traditions. Check the current visitor access arrangements before your visit, as they may change.
The parish church of Saints Simon and Jude the Apostles in Skawina was founded by Kazimierz Wielki and most recently rebuilt in 1826. The church houses the 17th-century image of Our Lady of Skawina, which is especially venerated by the faithful. The building’s history and the Marian image offer different points of reference if you are interested in the town’s religious history.
Skawina also has a surviving Jewish synagogue dating from the early 20th century. The former hospital church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was founded in 1471 by Maciej Skawinka, abbot of the Benedictines of Tyniec. It houses the 16th-century Renaissance painting “Crucifixion.” The town’s religious architectural and artistic history thus spans the founding of the hospital church in 1471, works from the 16th and 17th centuries, and the rebuilding of the parish church in 1826.
The Pałacyk “Sokół” was built between 1904 and 1906 on the site of a fortified castle. The castle itself was probably built either by Kazimierz Wielki or shortly after his death; its origins are unclear. Monthly concerts entitled “Muzyczne Poniedziałki” (Musical Mondays) are held at the Pałacyk. If you are considering attending a concert during your stay, check the current dates in advance, as the programme may change.
You can reach the Pałacyk “Sokół” on city bus routes 203, 223, 233, 235, S1, S2, S3, S4 and S5, getting off at the Skawina Szkoła stop on ul. Mickiewicza. Check the current route and timetable before travelling, as routes may change.
Cycling and outdoor activities
The paved Velo SKAwina route runs for more than 11 kilometres from the town of Skawina to Jaśkowice and connects with the Wiślana Trasa Rowerowa. It is suitable for leisure cycling, walking and recreation. The loop at Skawińskie Błonia is laid out differently: it is 800 metres long, also paved, and suitable for running, inline skating, riding a kick scooter and cycling. The practical difference is in the route’s shape and scale: a longer connection to Jaśkowice or a loop suitable for several of the activities listed.
