Pogorzany brings together two distinct themes for travel planning: remembering the events of 1944 in Smykań and a tour that passes through the village. It is also located almost entirely on the northeastern slope of Ciecień. If you are looking for a hotel in Pogorzany, these local features can help you decide what interests you: the memorial site represents local history, while the tour offers a specific route with a stated duration and distance.

Memorial Sites and Directions

During the pacification operation in Smykań, a hamlet of Pogorzany, in September 1944, German troops murdered 42 people. Eighteen of them were burned alive in a barn; execution units also burned down 17 houses. A monument to the victims of the pacification operation in Smykań is located 50 meters from the main road. In Pogorzany, a memorial obelisk to the victims was ceremonially unveiled on May 18, 1986. Thus, the historical events of September 1944 and the later unveiling on May 18, 1986 represent two distinct moments of remembrance. It is also important to note that Smykań is a hamlet belonging to Pogorzany.

On the Szczyrzyc–Dobczyce road, turn left in Pogorzany after a wooden bus shelter onto a narrow paved road. The shelter and turn-off provide a specific landmark for finding the way to the monument. Road and path conditions may change; check the current conditions locally if needed.

Location on Ciecień and Nearby Places

Pogorzany lies almost entirely on the northeastern slope of Ciecień. The highest mountains in the Jodłownik municipality are Ciecień at 829 m and Kostrza at 720 m. These elevations refer to the municipality, whereas the hillside location describes the village itself. This distinction clarifies the two different scales: Pogorzany is located almost entirely on Ciecień, while the ranking of the highest mountains applies to the Jodłownik municipality.

Near the destination, below Diabli Kamień, is the hermitage of Saint Benedict. It was founded in the early 19th century. Its location below the rock and the time of its founding give the surrounding area its own historical significance.
