Miechów combines historic architecture, art, remembrance and cycling. This offers several ways to plan a stay: from the monastery and church complex to a gallery featuring original works and cycling routes through forests, agricultural areas and built-up areas. One route is 9.1 kilometres long and leads to Bukowska Wola; another follows streets in Miechów towards Poradów.

Architecture between manor house and monastery

The Church and Monastery of the Canons Regular of the Holy Sepulchre in Miechów were founded in 1163 by Jaksa of the Gryfita family. The “Zacisze” Manor House in Miechów is listed in the register of monuments and is part of the Małopolska Wooden Architecture Route. In the wider Miechów destination, Dworek Zacisze was built on 16 August 1784 and is considered a rare example of an urban manor house. This building therefore combines listed-monument status with membership in an architectural route.

In the wider Miechów destination, the present-day parish church in the monastery and church complex is a three-aisled, three-bay Gothic basilica with well-preserved Romanesque fragments from the 13th century. Following the great fire in Miechów in 1745, it underwent extensive remodelling in the late Baroque style in the second half of the 18th century. The Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre in Miechów is also part of this history: it is a copy of the original chapel in Jerusalem. The complex thus brings together its founding history, preserved older architectural elements and later remodelling.

Art and remembrance

The Permanent Gallery of Stefan Żechowski’s Work in Miechów displays original works by the artist. These include unique early works from the period before he began his professional art education. Their dating offers a glimpse into a period before that training and adds a distinct artistic focus to the architectural history.

The Jewish Cemetery in Miechów is a solemn historical site. A building of the funeral home and a fenced mass grave of Jews murdered after the liquidation of the Miechów ghetto have been preserved there. The surviving architectural elements and the specific historical context make the cemetery a place of remembrance; the history of the ghetto is essential to understanding the mass grave.

Cycling routes through varied landscapes

A 9.1 km cycling route leads from Chodówki Forest through rural and agricultural areas, as well as the densely built-up part of Miechów, to Bukowska Wola. The route’s length and the sequence of landscapes and settlements give it a clear course. Forest, farmland and more densely built-up sections form different parts of the same route.

Another cycling route passes the “Zacisze” Manor House in Miechów. It follows ul. Racławicka, ul. Szpitalna and ul. Pęckowskiego towards Poradów. These are two differently described cycling options: the first specifies a distance of 9.1 km, its starting point at Chodówki Forest and its destination, Bukowska Wola; the second can be followed by the manor house, the sequence of streets and the direction towards Poradów.

Additional places in the wider Miechów destination

The Złota Góra Nature Reserve in the Las Jaksicki forest complex is part of the wider Miechów destination. It was established in 1955 to protect the steppe vegetation and subcontinental oak-hornbeam forest found there, and is considered a natural attraction. Another place for recreation is Miechów’s 7-hectare town park, which has tennis courts, a training field, a route for cyclists and roller skaters, and an outdoor gym. Two playgrounds are adapted to different age groups.

Miechów is also the main point of reference for getting there: the town lies on national road E-7, 40 km from Kraków. Nature, urban recreational facilities and its regional road connections complement the local themes of architecture, art and cycling without replacing them.
