Jawornik: Churches and Historic Traces
Accommodation in Jawornik
Jawornik lies on the upper reaches of the Głogoczówka, which is also called the Jaworniczanka or Zakręty locally. The history of the village can be traced through several distinct features: a church tower listed in the heritage register, the relocation of an older wooden church, chapels, and a monument commemorating the victims of a crime. These sites give your travel plans a specific historical focus.
Churches and Historical Layers
The three-storey tower of the parish church “Kościół Parafialny pw. Podwyższenia Krzyża Świętego” is listed in the heritage register. Jawornik’s parish is also documented in historical records: it appears together with its priest, ks. Mikołaj, in the church tax register of 1325. This entry and the surviving building history point to different periods without combining them into a single account of the church’s origins.
The wooden parish church “Kościół Parafialny pw. Znalezienia i Podwyższenia Krzyża św.” dates from the 17th century and was moved to Kraków-Krzesławice in 1982. The tower, enclosure and surrounding trees remained at its historic site. The church’s connection to the village is therefore also reflected today in the features preserved at its former location.
Chapels and Remembrance
At the entrance to the cemetery stands a free-standing wayside chapel with a statue of Saint Stanislaus on a plinth erected in 1907. Its inscription recalls the old church of Saint Stanislaus, which burned down on 2 June 1904. It also states that the statue was erected on 8 May 1907 with contributions from the local parish community. The structure, inscription and dates thus connect local remembrance with specific years.
The chapel in Bugaj, Jawornik, was built in 1908 by the Feliks family in gratitude for their daughter Anna’s recovery from an illness. In spring 2002, the residents of Bugaj rebuilt the chapel at its original site. Its founding and reconstruction mark two separate stages in its history.
The monument to the murdered residents of Jawornik stands at the site of the crime, on the road towards Sułkowice. It bears the names of the twelve people killed in the crime on 6 April 1944. Its specific location and the names inscribed on it give this memorial its own place alongside the religious buildings and traces of remembrance.

Myślenice as a Separate Regional Context
The wider destination of Myślenice includes other historical and landscape features that should not be conflated with Jawornik’s own characteristics. Myślenice’s historic urban layout is an example of a medieval town plan; remnants of a settlement that existed before the town was founded have survived. It is regarded as a valuable monument at both regional and national level. At the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Myślenice, the church was built in the mid-15th century, and the early Baroque chapel was added in 1642–1646. The sanctuary houses a miraculous 16th-century image painted in Italy, which became the destination of numerous pilgrimages.
The hiking routes in the wider destination of Myślenice can also be compared by their stated distances and durations. The red trail from Myślenice via Działek, Kudłacze and Łysina to Jaworzyce is 15.5 kilometres long and takes six hours.
