Discover Zaskale: Routes and Local History
Accommodation in Zaskale
Zaskale can be understood through its routes and local history. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Zaskale, these themes can help guide your choice of destination: a tourist trail passes through the village, while its church, ensemble and regional events tell different sides of its history.
Routes through Zaskale and onward into the region
The tourist Kazimierz-Przerwa-Tetmajer Trail passes through Zaskale. From Szaflary, it runs through Ludźmierz, Krauszów, Dział and Pieniążkowice to the summit of Zeleźnica. The sequence of places puts Zaskale on a longer route, with the summit as its named destination. For orientation, it is therefore important not only to know the name of the village, but also which places come before it and where the trail leads next.
Another point of reference is the Szlak Wokół Tatr, which also passes through Zaskale. An official route description for a family cycling tour from 2025 names the village along this route. A developed 35-kilometre section runs on the Polish side from Nowy Targ through Zaskale, Rogoźnik, Stare Bystre, Czarny Dunajec and Podczerwone to the state border. On the Slovak side, the route continues through Suchá Góra, Głodówka and Lasek to Trstená.
The two routes offer different points of orientation: the Kazimierz-Przerwa-Tetmajer Trail focuses on the route to the summit of Zeleźnica, while the Szlak Wokół Tatr features a 35-kilometre section in Poland and continues towards Trstená. In winter, the named routes serve as cross-country skiing trails. If you are planning a specific tour, check the current route and conditions in advance.
Local history and cultural events
One historical point of reference is St. Adalbert's Church: in 1987, Pope John Paul II consecrated the cornerstone of the church in Zaskale. The year places this event in the context of local history without conflating it with the routes.
The “Mali Zaskalanie” ensemble began its activities at Zaskale Primary School in 1990. It performs at community events such as Zoskalańskie Jodełko, Opłatek Wiejski and the family festival in Zaskale. The ensemble also performs in the wider region: at Przeziyracka Młodyk Toniecnikow i Śpiywokow Góralskich in Ratułów and at Papieska Majówka in Bachledówka. The three community events mentioned are associated with the village; Ratułów and Bachledówka are in the wider area.
Regional cuisine at past events
At the 2018 edition of Zoskalańskie Jodełko, guests could sample regional dishes, cakes and cheese. At the time, the event was described as a long-standing annual tradition. Another culinary event was the 24th Gminny Konkurs Potraw Regionalnych: on 17 November, cooks from across the Szaflary municipality gathered at the Remiza in Zaskale. The two examples highlight different aspects: Jodełko focused on tastings for guests, while the competition brought together cooks from across the municipality.
