Zubrzyca Górna: Village Life and Building Styles in Orawa
Accommodation in Zubrzyca Górna
Zubrzyca Górna has a clear cultural focus: at Muzeum - Orawski Park Etnograficzny, village life, historic buildings and rural work in Orawa take centre stage. The site combines insights into residential and communal buildings with examples of crafts and economic activity. If you are planning a stay around your cultural interests, this combination offers a concrete point of reference within the village.
Rural Life and Buildings of Orawa
The picture of village life includes historic houses and a manor house, farm buildings and workshops. There are also household objects and decorative elements, as well as chapels, a church, a rectory, a school and an inn. The main building material is wood, but paper, clay and straw are also used. Residential houses and the manor house stand alongside buildings used for work and communal purposes.
The historic buildings come from various places in Upper Orawa and can be visited as exhibits. They include the Czarna Karczma and a granary from Podwilk, the house of Alojzy Dziubek from Jabłonka, the wooden Church of Matki Bożej Śnieżnej from Tokarnia and a rectory from Podwilk. The place names show where the individual buildings came from: the exhibition brings together structures from several places in Upper Orawa.
Living, Working and Special Building Features
Along the themed trail on rural economic activity, the park features a sawmill, a mill, blacksmiths' workshops, a fulling mill, an oil mill, a mangler, an apiary and a reconstruction of a dye works from Orawka. This brings different activities together, from sawing and milling to blacksmithing and beekeeping. This working world complements the view of residential houses and public buildings with examples of rural economic life.
A distinctive feature of some wooden houses is the wyżka, a storage space in the attic above a living area. Access was via a small balcony and beams that projected beyond the line of the building. The description of the wyżka thus links its purpose with the way the space was reached. This makes it possible to consider not only the exterior appearance but also the functional layout of a house.
The grounds of Muzeum - Orawski Park Etnograficzny cover about 12 hectares. Permanent exhibitions, smaller architectural structures and the surrounding nature together form a site comprising two parts. Another historic complex is Dwór Moniaków: it consists of six buildings that have stood here for more than 400 years. A description from late 2017 gives the total number of objects in the permanent exhibitions as 60.
