Osiek: Local History and Cycling Routes
Osiek brings together two practical topics for planning a trip: local history and cycling. If you are looking for a hotel in Osiek, you can consider whether the area’s cultural heritage or its varied cycling routes will play a bigger part in your stay. Local history includes a church, a chapel with a statue of the Virgin Mary, a cross column and old wooden houses. The cycling routes differ in their loop format, markings and course.
Osiek was first mentioned in 1408; the oldest document naming the village dates from 1435. The two dates mark different historical reference points: the village’s first mention and the oldest document to name it. The name Osiek derives from “osiek,” a term for a place where a forest stronghold built from tree trunks stood. The place name thus connects today’s name with a historical form of settlement.
Church and Historical Traces
The Church of Najświętszej Marii Panny Królowej Świata in Osiek was built between 1974 and 1978. The parish of NMP Królowej Świata was established on 1 March 1979 by Bishop Jan Jaroszewicz. Beside the church, in front of the rectory, is a contemporary chapel with an interesting statue of the Virgin Mary. A stone column with a cross stands in front of the church. Its inscription probably names the donor, Bigay Woyciech, and refers to the year 1687. A church built in the 1970s and a column dating back to the late 17th century thus stand side by side as markers of different historical periods.
Wooden Houses and Open Landscape
Several old wooden houses have been preserved in Osiek, including some dating from the early 20th century. Osiek is one of the villages with historically valuable settlement patterns and a valuable open landscape. It is therefore worth looking at the village on two scales: individual historic buildings and the settlement and landscape patterns that shape the village as a whole.
Cycling Routes Connected with Osiek
The “Szlak Kordonu Granicznego” cycling route forms a loop just over 20 kilometres long; its northern section runs below Osiek. An orange-marked cycling route also starts at a forest crossroads below the village and continues through Osiek. The blue “Wokół Olkusza” cycling route runs from Olkusz through Bukowno and Wapiennik, via Osiek to Witeradów, and then back to Olkusz. This makes it possible to distinguish a loop route, a trail that starts below the village, and a ride through several places. Descriptions of the loop and the orange-marked route are older; check local conditions before cycling.
More Cultural Attractions in the Wider Olkusz Destination
In the wider Olkusz destination, the Silver Juggler Trail is an educational and historical trail in the Old Town. It includes 18 miner figures and more than 130 replicas of Olkusz trojaks set into the pavement—that is, coins bearing the image of King Sigismund III Vasa. The Basilica of St Andrew in Olkusz is a Gothic church built at the turn of the 14th century, in the late 13th or early 14th century. Its most valuable work of art is a Gothic winged altarpiece from the late 15th century, one of only four such altarpieces in Poland. The “Podziemny Olkusz” exhibition is also in Olkusz: one display is located in the cellars of the former 14th-century town hall. A second exhibition is housed in the cellars of the former Royal Quarter, once the seat of the Olkusz mining authorities.
