Kęty: Town History, Church Art and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Kęty
Kęty combines a well-preserved, regular medieval town layout with museums, religious heritage and cycling routes. When planning your trip, you can focus on different themes: the historic urban layout, collections relating to everyday life and crafts, church art or outdoor activities. This allows you to tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most in Kęty.
Townscape and Collections
Kęty’s regular medieval town layout dates from the late 14th century and is well preserved. If you are interested in the historic townscape, you can combine this focus on urban development with a look at local collections. The Muzeum im. Aleksandra Kłosińskiego is located in a historic townhouse at Rynek 16.
The museum displays household items, exhibits on food preparation, and pottery from local centers of pottery-making. There are also handmade historic toys by local craftsmen. The subjects range from household life and food preparation to pottery and toys. A tourist information office is also located at Miejsce Aktywności Mieszkańców, Rynek 13. Check its current opening details before you arrive.
Churches and Monastic Heritage
The parish church of St Margaret and St Catherine in Kęty was built as the first shrine to St John Cantius in Poland and worldwide. It attracts pilgrims to the miraculous image of Our Lady of Kęty, dated to the first quarter of the 15th century. The image follows the Byzantine Hodegetria type and comes from the so-called Kraków school. This example thus brings together a pilgrim tradition and a precisely described art-historical classification.
In 1715, amid growing devotion and pilgrimage activity, the Church of St John Cantius was enlarged into the Baroque church seen today. Its furnishings are late Baroque; the main altar, with the painting “Vision of St John of Kęty,” dates from 1722. The church also contains a wax sculpture of St John Cantius. Professors from the Kraków Academy donated it in 1767 to commemorate his canonization.
The monastery complex of the Reformed Franciscans is also a notable destination for those interested in sacred architecture: it is considered a valuable 18th-century monument. The Muzeum Klasztorne is located in the monastery. The Franciscan church also houses a polychrome Pietà from the first quarter of the 15th century. Annual celebrations of the Franciscan Portiuncula indulgence take place in the monastery complex, drawing thousands of worshippers. If you wish to plan your trip around these celebrations, check the dates.
The monastery museum is scheduled to open to visitors on selected Sundays after the 10:00 and 12:00 Masses. Before planning a visit, confirm whether and when this arrangement is currently in effect.
Cycling Routes and Historic Trails
Kęty has extensive cycling routes that form part of the Ziemia Oświęcimska cycling network. They often follow quiet routes through forests and fields, along rivers and between ponds. The cycling network thus offers a different focus from the museums and churches: the emphasis here is on routes through varied landscapes. The character of individual sections may change; check their current route if you plan to ride a specific stretch.
For a historic walk through the streets around the market square, there is the quest “Z Kantym po Kętach.” The walk passes through streets adjoining Kęty’s market square; Cantius accompanies participants as the town’s patron saint, who came from Kęty. It is designed as an outdoor quest that is available at any time. Its starting point is about 0.6 km on foot from Kęty railway station; check the local signage before you arrive. Another named route is the “Szlak Śladami Kęckich Świętych, Błogosławionych i Świątobliwych,” which was established in Kęty. Confirm on site that this route is currently accessible.
The quest combines a historic walk around the market square with the theme of the town’s patron saint; the cycling routes often follow quiet paths through forests and fields and along waterways. When looking for a hotel in Kęty, you can first consider whether town history, sacred art or outdoor activities should be the focus of your stay.
