Zarnowka lies in the valley of the Żarnowianka stream, a right-bank tributary of the Skawa, at the foot of the Koskowa Góra range in the Maków Beskids. Three topics are especially useful for understanding the destination: its location between valley and mountains, the cycling route, and local cultural heritage.

Valley and Mountain Landscape

The Żarnowianka stream and the Skawa give the village a clear geographical setting. On its northeastern edge, the area reaches Koskowa Góra, which rises to 866 m. From there, views extend to the Jałowiec range and Babia Góra; in clear weather, the Tatra Mountains and Kraków are also visible. These distant views are therefore subject to a specific visibility condition. The forests around Zarnowka are rich in berries and mushrooms, adding to the picture of this mountain-fringed landscape.

The valley, mountain edge, and forest describe different aspects of the surroundings. If you are interested in the landscape, it is worth distinguishing these geographical features: Zarnowka lies in the Żarnowianka valley, while the area reaches Koskowa Góra on its northeastern edge. The view from there connects the nearby mountain landscape with more distant destinations, whose visibility—including that of the Tatra Mountains and Kraków—depends explicitly on clear weather.

The Red-Marked Cycling Route

A red-marked cycling route approximately 20 km long passes through Zarnowka. It connects the market square in Maków Podhalański with Głowackiego Street and 3 Maja Street via the Makowska Góra settlement, Bryndzówka, Przysłopski Wierch, and Mount Koskowa. The length and route address different planning questions: the approximate distance gives an idea of the scale, while the sequence of named places outlines the described route. Markings and route conditions may change, so check them before setting out on a bike ride.

The route is a specific reference point for travelers who want to explore Zarnowka by bike. Its description includes the market square in Maków Podhalański as well as settlements, a peak, and streets as named points along the way. The cycling route can thus be considered a distinct option alongside the village’s landscape and history, without combining these different interests into a single itinerary.

Local History and Cultural Heritage

Zarnowka was founded toward the end of the 16th century by settlers from the Kraków and Wieliczka areas under the supervision of royal forester Piotr Oczkowski. The village’s founding is an early point of historical reference. Much later, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was built: its cornerstone was laid in 1993 and donated by the parish priest of Wawel Cathedral, Prelate Janusz Bieleleński. The church was consecrated in 1996. The cornerstone laying and consecration place its construction in time.

Historical monuments include a stone figure of the Nazarene Christ dating from 1828 and a brick chapel with a shingle roof and a sculpture of Christ falling under the cross, dating from the late 18th century. The chapel’s approximate date and the year of the figure point to older examples than the church, whose cornerstone was laid in 1993. Another monument commemorates partisans who were captured and executed by a German unit in 1945. Together, these places and objects represent different historical connections: religious heritage, sculptural depictions, and remembrance of the events of 1945.

Crafts and Cultural Traditions

Zarnowka’s rural cottage-industry traditions include embroidery and the making of wooden products. Wood was traditionally worked into items such as shingles, wooden tubs, and buckets. These examples illustrate the range of local crafts: alongside textile work are household items and building components made of wood. The craft tradition passed down through the generations therefore encompasses more than one material or a single type of product.

The Koło Gospodyń Wiejskich (Rural Housewives’ Association) in Zarnowka has been active since February 2003 and is based at the Dom Ludowy (People’s House). It organizes social gatherings and celebrations and preserves culinary traditions, regional costumes, local customs, and folk songs. These topics complement the architectural monuments with the village’s cultural traditions. When planning your trip, the landscape, cycling route, and these diverse heritage sites each offer their own points of interest.
