You can get to know Tuchów through its history, museums, pilgrimage traditions and marked hiking trails. These themes lead from the market square and its distinctive setting to collections and sacred art, then on to two hiking routes with different endpoints. You can therefore plan your stay around the places and topics that interest you most.

Market Square and City History

The market square lies on a steep hill that slopes down east and north towards the Biała Valley. The town’s foundation and layout date back to 1340; the town hall on the market square was built in 1873–1874. The early history of the town and a 19th-century town hall thus meet in the same square. The topography is also part of the picture: the contours of the land make it easy to understand the town’s position above the Biała Valley.

Museums and Sacred Art

The Muzeum Miejskie w Tuchowie is housed in the restored cellars of the cultural centre. Its themed rooms display more than 3,000 exhibits, including mementos from the First and Second World Wars, ethnographic collections, documents and photographs. Historical objects and visual sources complement the mementos from the two wars. For current visit arrangements, it is advisable to contact the cultural centre.

The ethnographic museum in Tuchów displays items from former apiaries, flax-processing equipment and historical agricultural tools. The collection also includes oil lamps, jewellery and other objects from rural everyday life. Together, these collections offer varied insights into past crafts, agricultural work and everyday objects.

The Tuchów Triptych, also known as the “Holy Conversation from Tuchów,” is part of the town’s art history. It dates from the third quarter of the 15th century and comes from St James’s Church in Tuchów. Its name, date and place of origin connect the work with local art history while also placing it within a clearly defined period.

Pilgrimage and Church Interiors

The Marian Shrine of Tuchów attracts pilgrims throughout the year. The main indulgence celebration, held from 1 to 9 July, and the smaller indulgence celebration on 8 September are particularly notable. These two recurring annual occasions mark different points in the calendar: the multi-day event in July is followed by a single pilgrimage day in September. A Redemptorist Mission Museum has been housed in the monastery and shrine of Tuchów since 1975.

Under the open-air altar in the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary are a presentation room and other rooms. These include a moving Nativity scene that operates year-round, as well as mission and ethnographic museums. This area of the church brings together the Nativity scene and the museum rooms; the Redemptorist Mission Museum complements the history of the shrine with its own museum, established in 1975.

Hiking Trails and the Town

There are two blue-marked hiking trails, almost equal in length but with different destinations. The 8.5 km route runs from the area around Trzemeska Góra through Tuchowski Forest to the centre of Tuchów. The 8.6 km trail starts in Tuchów and passes through Kielanowice and Bistuszowa Podlesie on its way to Brzanka. When choosing between them, you can compare the stated starting points and endpoints: one route leads to the town centre, while the other ends at Brzanka. Check the details for the 8.5 km route before your hike.

Another way to explore the town’s history and former crafts is the “Tuchowski szlak rzeźb, pomników i miejsc które warto zobaczyć” (Tuchów Trail of Sculptures, Monuments and Places Worth Seeing). The sculptures along this route draw on the history of Tuchów and its former crafts. They therefore complement the museum collections with a theme also reflected in the name of the trail.
