Czarna Góra: History, Views and Activities
Accommodation in Czarna Góra
Czarna Góra combines a distinctive village history with scenic views and seasonal activities. When looking for a hotel in Czarna Góra, you can first consider whether cultural history, views from Litwinka, or outdoor pursuits will shape your stay. The chapels and the Korkosz farmstead represent different historical themes; summer swimming, cycling routes, and a ski lift add outdoor activities to the mix.
Village History and Historic Sites
Czarna Góra is one of the fourteen villages of the Polish Spiš region. The village was established around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. A later date also marks its history: the first glider flights in Poland took place in Czarna Góra in 1923. These dates link the village’s early beginnings with an event in the history of Polish gliding.
In the part of Czarna Góra above the Białka River, the Chapel of the Holy Trinity was built in 1872. In the Budzówka district, a wayside chapel dedicated to St. John of Nepomuk was founded after the 1874 flood. The two chapels can be distinguished by their different historical points of reference: one by its dedication and year of construction, the other by its location and connection with the flood.
The Korkosz Farmstead in Zagóra
In the northern part of Czarna Góra, in the Zagóra district, stands the wooden farmstead of the once-wealthy Korkosz family. The farmstead houses an ethnographic exhibition about a prosperous Spiš farm from the interwar period. The farmstead thus complements the chapels with a different cultural and historical theme: here, the focus is on an interwar-period farm, while the chapels are associated with their dedication, year of construction, and connection to the flood. The exhibition therefore sets its own temporal and thematic focus within the history of the village.
Litwinka and Outdoor Activities
From Litwinka, you can see four national parks: Tatra, Babia Góra, Gorce, and Pieniny National Parks. These named destinations give the viewpoint a specific connection to the surrounding landscape. For travelers interested in scenic views, Litwinka is therefore a distinct highlight alongside the village’s historic sites.
In summer, visitors swim in a clean river in Czarna Góra. Cycling routes are another possible activity: the 30-kilometer “Białka – Droga Królewska – Czarna Góra” mountain biking route passes through the village. Check current route conditions before setting out.
Another route starts and ends in Bukowina Tatrzańska. It follows a paved road downhill to Czarna Góra, continues through Trybsz to Leśnica, and then climbs back through the village to Bukowina Tatrzańska. Its course can be identified by the sequence of places and the paved descent. Before setting out, also check current route conditions and signage.
The longest ski lift in the Bukowina Tatrzańska municipality is located on the eastern slope of Litwińska Grapa. If the lift is important to your travel plans, check in advance whether it will be operating during your visit. This also lets you take your travel dates and the activities that matter most to your stay into account when looking for a hotel in Czarna Góra: swimming is a summer activity, while the cycling routes and ski lift require a current check.
