Babica: Chapels, Settlement Traces and Landscape
Accommodation in Babica
Babica lies along the route connecting Wadowice and Stanisław Górny. The Babica stream divides the village into two parts and is a tributary of the Wysoka stream. Water, historic roadside markers, evidence of earlier settlement and wooded heights give the area its distinct character. If you are planning a stay in Babica, you can explore the local sights according to your interest in small religious architecture, local history or landscape.
Chapels and Religious Roadside Markers
A wayside chapel built in 1828 stands on the main road from Wadowice to Wysoka. It is considered one of the oldest chapels in Wadowice Municipality. Its construction date and historical significance make it a tangible landmark in Babica’s history.
Other religious roadside markers include shrine chapels featuring various depictions and dedications. One depicts the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Christ fallen beneath the cross; another is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. Babica is also home to a shrine chapel known as the Pietà Chapel. A wooden cross stands on the road to Wysoka. A shrine chapel stands at a road junction on the boundary between Babica and Witanowice.
Settlement Traces and Biography
An archaeological site in Babica documents traces of settlement from the Middle Ages. Fragments of the historic settlement structure have also been preserved. As distinct forms of evidence, they offer two perspectives on local history: medieval settlement on the one hand, and the area’s earlier layout on the other.
On the southern edge of Babica, beside the yellow hiking trail, stands the childhood home of Lieutenant Tadeusz Sadowski “Tomo”. He was born there on 1 July 1922 and lived there until the age of nineteen. The house’s location on the southern edge of the village and the biography of its former resident give it a distinct historical significance.
Landscape and Orientation
A historic road in the southern part of Babica forms a scenic viewing corridor along much of its length. Here, the term describes a longer stretch of road, not just a single viewpoint. The Babica valley also offers picturesque views. A chain of ponds has been preserved in the northern part of the village; wooded summit areas of the Silesian Foothills also shape the landscape. The southern road corridor and the northern chain of ponds thus serve as distinct landscape reference points, complemented by the valley and wooded heights.
