Lgota offers several points of interest to consider when planning your trip: local history, cycling routes and its location along the Brodawka in a valley bordered to the southwest by the Moczurka ridge. If you are looking for a hotel in Lgota, first consider whether remembrance, cycling or the landscape will be the main focus of your stay. Local points of interest range from a precisely dated historical event to specific route and elevation details.

Memorial Site and Local History

An obelisk in Lgota commemorates eight victims of the Nazi pacification of the hamlet of Podlas on 29 October 1944. The monument was unveiled in 1984 and renovated in 2019. When placing these dates in context, distinguish between the event and the history of the monument: 1944 refers to the historical event, 1984 to the unveiling and 2019 to the renovation.

The earlier history of the village can also be traced through specific dates. Lgota is mentioned by its present name as early as 1380, when Jakób z Lgoty inherited the village. The Lgocki family offers another perspective on its history: it owned Lgota continuously for about 300 years, for at least nine generations along the male line.

The school is also part of the village’s development. It was founded in Lgota at the end of the 19th century and is now a branch of the primary school in Witanowice. This later institutional development adds to the early history of the village’s name, inheritance and ownership.

Cycling Routes and Event History

The 12.8 km orange cycling route passes the monument in Lgota. The yellow cycling route also passes the obelisk, making the memorial site a shared landmark on both routes. If you are planning a specific route, check the current route and signage in advance.

The “Krzemionka Cross” trail race was held in Lgota at least three times. At its third edition in June 2022, runners could choose between an 8 km course with 300 m of elevation gain and a 15 km course with 620 m of elevation gain. The longer option was seven kilometres longer and had 320 m more elevation gain. The two race routes from that event can therefore be compared by distance and elevation gain.

Another historical event connection is the first “Monte Lgota” rally, held in 1979; Lgota was on the route for that inaugural edition. Lgota hosted the 2017 edition of the Tomice Municipality Harvest Festival. The festival is a long-standing tradition in the event calendar of the Carp Valley Festival.

Landscape and Geographic Setting

Lgota lies along the Brodawka in a valley bordered to the southwest by the Moczurka ridge. Moczurka is 437 m high and forms the western end of the Draboża Plateau in the southwestern part of the Wieliczka Foothills. This geographic description leads from the river and valley at Lgota to a named ridge, and then to the regional plateau and foothills. If the landscape matters when choosing your destination, the Brodawka, Moczurka and Draboża Plateau offer specific geographic points of reference.
