Koźmice Wielkie combines a river landscape with forest and historic landmarks. The Wilga flows through the northern part of the village from southeast to northwest, forming a broad valley characterized by meadows. Part of Czarny Las also lies within Koźmice Wielkie. When planning your trip, you can distinguish the local highlights of landscape and history from the attractions in the broader destination of Wieliczka.

Landscape by the river and in Czarny Las

The Wilga Valley is broad and characterized by meadows. The part of Czarny Las that lies within Koźmice Wielkie has a different character: the forest grows on steep slopes unsuitable for agriculture. Oaks and beeches predominate; spruce and pine make up only a small proportion. Blackberries, raspberries, wild strawberries and mushrooms grow in the forest, among other things. The mushrooms attract foragers. The river and forest can therefore be distinguished by different features: the valley is defined by meadows and the course of the Wilga, while the forest is defined by its slopes, tree species and wild produce.

Chapel, saint’s statue and memorial

A chapel dating from the first half of the 19th century stands on the boundary between Koźmice Wielkie and Siercza. It was renovated toward the end of the century and is still regarded as a symbol of the local population’s faith. Near the Wilga, at the intersection of the Wieliczka–Myślenice road and the road to Janowice, stands a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk made entirely of stone. It dates from 1827; it was commissioned by Jan Holewa.

Another historic landmark is the memorial to the partisans of the ZWZ-AK “Sosna-Las” unit. It was unveiled on 2 May 2013 and commemorates the partisans who fought German troops from 1940 to 1945. The chapel, statue of the saint and memorial represent different forms of local religious and historical remembrance.
