Niepołomice: Castle, History and Trails
Accommodation in Niepołomice
Castle history, collections and routes towards the forest give a trip to Niepołomice several different focuses. The Royal Castle, the Church of the Ten Thousand Martyrs and the Muzeum Niepołomickie offer concrete points of reference for the town’s history. You can plan your visit around what interests you most: historic buildings, collections, an organised town tour or trails towards the forest.
Castle and Church: Two Historic Stops
Niepołomice Royal Castle was built in the 1340s on the initiative of King Casimir the Great. At the beginning of the 16th century, under King Sigismund the Old, it was remodelled in the Renaissance style as a royal residence. Its construction and later remodelling mark two distinct stages in the castle’s history. The Muzeum Niepołomickie is housed in the castle.
The Church of the Ten Thousand Martyrs in Niepołomice was built as a Gothic church between 1350 and 1358 and founded by King Casimir the Great. Casimir the Great is a point of reference for both buildings, though in different roles: his initiative is cited in connection with the castle’s construction, while the church was a royal foundation. This makes it possible to compare two buildings from the town’s history without treating their respective histories as the same.
Collections and Town Tour
The Regional Room in Niepołomice displays around 400 exhibits across 120 m², covering the material culture of villages, small towns and the affluent bourgeoisie. It focuses on objects and ways of life from different social contexts. In contrast to the construction dates and styles of the castle and church, material culture takes centre stage here.
The Muzeum Niepołomickie offers organised groups a one-hour, 1 km town tour. It goes along Podzamcze, to the statue of King Casimir the Great, the market square and the statue of Justyna, then on to the Church of the Ten Thousand Martyrs, the town hall, the park and the castle. If you are planning a group visit, the stated duration and the fact that the tour is explicitly intended for organised groups are important details for planning.
Routes Towards Puszcza Niepołomicka
One route into Puszcza Niepołomicka starts at the market square in Niepołomice. It follows Bocheńska Street, passes the parish church and reaches the car park on Road No. 75 at the edge of the forest. This gives the starting point, waypoints and endpoint: the route runs from the market square to the car park at the forest’s edge.
There is also an approximately 8 km horse-riding route in a forest area near Szarów, Dąbrowa, Gruszki and Staniątki. It runs exclusively along forest roads and tracks. The route descriptions differ: the route to Puszcza is described by its starting point and the car park at the forest’s edge, while the riding route is described by its approximate length, surface and the nearby places. The riding route is situated in the surrounding area and should not be understood as a town tour of Niepołomice.
Astronomy at the Youth Observatory
The Youth Observatory in Niepołomice, named after Kazimierz Kordylewski, offers sky observations, computer simulations, demonstrations and video presentations about astronomical phenomena. These different formats provide various ways to engage with astronomy. If you are including the observatory in your plans, check the current programme details before your visit.
