Węgrzce Wielkie offers several specific points of reference for planning your trip: a railway stop, a historic wayside chapel, and events with a clear place in time. The wider destination of Wieliczka adds mining, religious architecture, and hiking and cycling routes as separate themes.

Rail and getting around in Węgrzce Wielkie

Węgrzce Wielkie has a PKP stop on railway line No. 91 (SKA3). It lies between Kokotów stop and Podłęże station. If you are planning to arrive by train, check the connection and departure times for your travel date. One specific address in the village is Długa 359: this is where the LKS Węgrzcanka sports complex is located. This gives you a named street address to use for orientation, in addition to the railway stop.

Chapel, local history, and an event

The Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary is among the oldest surviving wayside chapels in Wieliczka municipality. This description applies to the municipality and makes the chapel a distinctive historical landmark within the village. Another perspective on local history comes from the Koło Gospodyń Wiejskich (Rural Housewives’ Circle), founded in 1958 at the initiative of the local parish priest. Thus, a surviving architectural landmark and the dated founding of a local organization stand side by side. A more recent point of reference is 2025, when the 19th edition of Dni Węgrzc Wielkich was celebrated.

Wieliczka as the wider destination

In the wider destination of Wieliczka, the Salt Mine is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Royal Salt Mines of Wieliczka and Bochnia.” The underground Miners’ Route includes 7 to 14 mining chambers in the rough workings around the oldest surviving Regis Shaft and is up to 2 kilometers long. The figures for the chambers and the length refer to different aspects of the route: the first number describes the chambers, and the second its maximum length.

Two different route descriptions are available for outdoor activities. The yellow trail is a hiking and cycling route between Wieliczka and Dobczyce. The red cycling route forms a 27-kilometer loop through Wieliczka and Siercza. Comparing the two by activity and route shape, the yellow trail is designated for hiking and cycling and defined by its endpoints; the red one is a cycling route in a loop, with its length specified. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The churches also offer different historical perspectives. The wooden Church of St. Sebastian in Wieliczka was built in 1582 and contains Renaissance paintings. The Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Grabie dates from 1742; inside is a Gothic stone baptismal font from the 15th century. The baptismal font is therefore older than the church’s recorded construction date. The Parish Church of St. Clement in Wieliczka was built in 1381 through a donation from the townspeople; architectural elements from the 13th and 14th centuries have been preserved inside. The Franciscan Church and Franciscan Monastery were built in the first half of the 17th century and were the first stone church of the Lesser Poland Reformed Franciscan Province. These examples offer a chronological perspective from the Middle Ages to the early modern period.

On September 8, 2026, Zamek Żupny and its courtyard were closed for renovation work, which was expected to continue until the end of 2028. Check the latest status before visiting.
