Brzeziny – Clothmaking Traditions and Historic Architecture
Accommodation in Brzeziny
Brzeziny combines a rich textile history with a historic market square, religious buildings from different eras and distinctive landscape features. Its development spans from 16th-century clothmaking to buildings from later centuries. The town park, pond and connecting route to Tadzin complement the historical themes with references to nature and local routes.
Clothmaking Traditions and the Historic Town Centre
In the second half of the 16th century, Brzeziny had more than 300 master clothmakers. At the time, the town was the largest and best-known centre of cloth production in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Another era in its textile history was the period before the two world wars, when Brzeziny was known as a town of tailors.
The historic market square, now called Plac Jana Pawła II, has a medieval layout. Since the early 16th century, the main streets have radiated from its corners. Along S. Staszica, Mickiewicza, Sienkiewicza, Reformacka and św. Anny streets stand Neo-Renaissance tenement houses from the late 19th century, built during the period when Brzeziny was known as a town of tailors.
Churches, Museum and Historic Buildings
The Regional Museum in Brzeziny is housed in a Neo-Gothic palace. The parish church pw. Podwyższenia św. Krzyża has an ensemble of historic funerary sculptures to which it owes its prominent place in Polish Renaissance art. It is also credited with outstanding historical and architectural value.
The church pw. św. Anny brings together different building phases: its older masonry section is a former 17th-century chapel, now used as a sacristy; the wooden section dates from the early 18th century. The Franciscan church and monastery complex was completed in 1700 and retains its Baroque character. A small monument commemorates those buried in the Jewish cemetery in Brzeziny.
Town Park, Pond and Surroundings
The town park was laid out along Piłsudskiego Street after 1945. Its grounds were home to an English garden belonging to the Lasocki family in the 18th and 19th centuries. The town pond is glacial in origin and about 10,000 years old; its island was probably built up artificially. On the shore stands the Studnia św. Jana Nepomucena: built in 1880, it is topped by a statue of the saint.
The source of the Mrożyca, a left-bank tributary of the Mroga, lies on the southwestern edge of the town. Nearby is also the eastern part of Łódź Hills Landscape Park, with forest complexes near Janinów, Poćwiardówka and Tadzin. This part of the park lies within the rural municipality of Brzeziny.
