Discover Sieradz: churches, museum and history
Accommodation in Sieradz
In Sieradz, sacred architectural history, a regional museum and traditional craft techniques come together. The seasonal opening of the Sieradzki Park Etnograficzny and the road and rail connections also offer practical points of reference for planning your trip.
Churches and historic buildings
The All Saints Parish Church is now the Basilica Minor of All Saints. The stone building dates from the 14th century and was extended in 1648–1682 and 1930. Another historic complex is the former Dominican monastery, now used by the Ursulines. Its stone church of St. Stanislaus was built in 1230–1250 and later altered after 1331 and in 1693–1718. Together, the construction phases of these churches date back to the Middle Ages and include several later extensions and alterations.
The history of secular architecture is also varied: the brick town theatre dates from before 1874 and was altered in 1900, 1924 and after 1950. A wooden former manor house building, relocated from Wrząca, is known as the “dworek modrzewiowy.” It dates from 1860, was restored in 1978–1980 and designed in the so-called Swiss style. A former brick inn from the first half of the 19th century now houses the Office for Art Exhibitions. The building was extended in the early 20th century and restored in the neoclassical style in 1982–1987.
Museum and traditional techniques
The Muzeum Okręgowe collects, documents and makes monuments and historical objects relating to the history of the Sieradz region available to visitors. Its focus is therefore on the region and its past. Blind and visually impaired visitors can take a free guided tour of the museum exhibitions by arranging it in advance by telephone.
Since 2006, the museum has taken part in the “Noc Muzeów” event. For the occasion, it prepares, among other things, openings of temporary exhibitions, concerts, meetings with regional historians and collectors, film screenings, children’s workshops and multimedia presentations. The programme may vary from one edition to another, so check the dates and programme for your travel date before your trip.
The Sieradzki Park Etnograficzny lies between the Żeglina River and the Paradzianka Reservoir, at the foot of the historic castle hill. The museum organises craft workshops, museum lessons and demonstrations of traditional techniques there. Individual programmes may vary.
Opening hours and visitor information
The park is open from 15 April to 15 October. Opening hours are 10:00–16:00 Tuesday to Friday and 10:00–17:00 on Saturdays and Sundays; the park is closed on Mondays. Check these seasonal opening hours before your visit.
Wheelchair users can visit the grounds of the Sieradzki Park Etnograficzny and the exhibition pavilion displaying agricultural equipment. However, grassy areas and wooden interiors may pose some limitations. By prior telephone arrangement, the museum also offers blind and visually impaired visitors a free guided tour of its exhibitions.
Getting there and cycling route
Sieradz is served by the S8 expressway between Wrocław, Łódź and Białystok, including the Sieradz Wschód and Sieradz-Południe exits. The double-track railway line No. 14, running from Łódź Kaliska to Tuplice in Lubusz Voivodeship, also passes through the city. It is a main line of national importance. For rail travel, check connections and timetables for your travel day.
For a cycling trip, the 120-kilometre Sieradzka eSka route passes through Sieradz. About 60 percent of the route runs on paved roads, with the remainder on gravel and sand. The varying surfaces give you a practical point of reference when planning the route.
When planning your hotel stay, you can consider your travel dates and interests together: a visit to the ethnographic park depends on its season, while the dates and programme of the relevant edition are key for “Noc Muzeów.”
