Dzietrzniki brings together several themes that may play a part in planning a trip: the architecture and history of the church, memorial sites in the village, a horse-riding trail that passes through it, and a spring in the surrounding area. Which of these you focus on gives your trip planning its own direction.

Church: Architecture and History

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is built of brick, has a cruciform layout and three aisles. It was built in the Vistula Gothic Revival style. The three aisles describe the layout of the church building; its floor plan and style define its form. Its dimensions also give a concrete sense of its scale: the church is 40 metres long, 22 metres wide and 18 metres high.

Its history includes another, very different use: during the Second World War, the church served as a grain store and ammunition depot. Its architecture and wartime history thus describe different aspects of the same building. Those interested in Dzietrzniki’s past will find here not only an architectural context but also a connection to how the site was used during the war.

Memorials at the Parish Cemetery

A grave and a monument at the parish cemetery in Dzietrzniki commemorate several groups and conflicts. They include January Uprising insurgents from Franciszek Parczewski’s unit who fell in the Battle of Kluski on 22 April 1863. The memorial site also commemorates participants in the Polish–Soviet War of 1918–1920, as well as soldiers and murdered civilians from the Second World War.

The commemorations therefore span the 19th-century uprising and the wars of the 20th century. The dates and references help distinguish these different historical layers: the date of the battle stands alongside a longer wartime period and the remembrance of victims of the Second World War.

Wieluń–Jura Horse-Riding Trail and a Rest Stop

The Wieluń–Jura Horse-Riding Trail passes through Dzietrzniki. One described stage leads to a rest stop at Mr Kalemba’s. The group rests there for two hours before continuing on horseback. This time refers to the described stage; it is not a duration for the entire trail.

If you include the horse-riding trail in your own tour plans, you can check the current route and trail conditions in advance. This helps distinguish the specific stage described here from the conditions on your own tour.

Spring, Tradition and Annual Dates

The Źródełko Objawienia spring lies near the village of Kałuże, in Dzietrzniki Forest, within the area known as Dolina Objawienia, close to the destination. Local residents and tourists have been visiting the spring for decades. It lies near a pine tree that is no longer there.

A historical account places a gathering of local residents in the forests of Dzietrzniki in August 1856. The gathering followed news that Franciszka Pęcherz had experienced an apparition of Mary in the branches of a tall pine tree. The event has been passed down as a reported apparition.

Mass is celebrated annually on 3 May and 15 August in a wooden chapel near the spring. The place of worship has not been officially recognised by church authorities. The dates of the Masses are fixed annual dates and should be distinguished from the historical account of August 1856. If you are planning a visit to the spring, check access conditions in advance.
