Discover Oława: culture, walking tour and indoor swimming pool
Accommodation in Oława
Oława offers a range of options for a stay: Gothic church architecture, a walking tour of the city and an indoor swimming pool open year-round. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, consider the purpose of your visit when choosing: would you like to focus on exercise, culture or time at the pool? The following destinations have distinct characters and can be planned as separate interests for your trip.
Indoor swimming pool and walking tour in Oława
Termy Jakuba in Oława offers a year-round indoor swimming pool with six 25-metre lap lanes and water play features. There is also a 70.80-metre slide and a sauna complex with a Finnish dry sauna, Roman sauna, bio sauna and salt cave. The facilities offer a range of options: swimming laps, using the water play features and slide, or focusing on the sauna facilities.
The indoor pool also has a 0.30-metre-deep paddling pool with Monika the frog, a water tongue and a mini waterfall. This feature complements the lap lanes and other water facilities with a separate shallow pool area.
If you would rather explore on foot, you can plan the “Spacer po Oławie” walking tour. It takes you to Oława’s most interesting places, is about 11 kilometres long and takes approximately four hours. The route is not marked on the ground. Bear this in mind when finding your way, and allow for both the approximate walking time and the lack of signage along the route.
Church architecture and archaeological finds
The Church of Our Lady of Consolation in Oława is a three-aisled basilica. The chancel of a Gothic church built around 1300 has been preserved; above it is a stellar vault dating from the 15th century. The information points to two stages in the building’s history: the construction of the Gothic church and the later addition of the vault.
In Oława Town Hall, the Izba Muzealna Ziemi Oławskiej displays archaeological finds from the Ryczyn hillfort. These finds offer a different focus from the church architecture, placing archaeological evidence at the centre.
Further orientation in the wider Ohlau destination
In the wider Ohlau destination, Oława’s city park covers 23.6 hectares. An educational ecology trail created in 2013 adds a nature theme to the park. The park area and the trail are two distinct aspects: the size of the grounds and their educational offering.
A 17th-century figurative astronomical clock is located in Oława’s Town Hall tower. With its moving figures, it is considered a monument unique in Europe. The Town Hall tower is occasionally opened to visitors during city holidays and events such as Dni Koguta or Museum Night. On these occasions, visitors can view the clock mechanism up close and access the viewing gallery, which offers views over the city and its surroundings. Check before your trip whether a suitable date is scheduled.
Route No. 1, “In the Footsteps of Nature Reserves,” begins at Oława railway station in the wider Ohlau destination. Another occasion there is the traditional Easter market, organised by Gmina Oława and the City of Oława. If the market is important to your travel plans, check the event dates for your planned period.
