Santoczno by Lake Mrowinko: Nature and ironworks history
Accommodation in Santoczno
Santoczno lies along the glacial channel of Lake Mrowinko, which covers 22.5 hectares, and the Santoczna River, which flows out of the lake. Alongside this landscape, the village has historic buildings and memorial sites connected with the former ironworks. You can get to know Santoczno from several perspectives: its waterways, its architectural history, or the traces of its former industry.
Landscape and Nature in Santoczno
The lake, glacial channel, and river course define the village’s natural setting. Another natural feature in Santoczno is a beech tree protected as a natural monument. Its trunk circumference is more than four metres, and it is estimated to be about 200 years old. These natural features offer different scales: on the one hand, the glacial channel with its lake and outflow; on the other, an individual tree with protected status and an estimated age. If you take landscapes and natural monuments into account when planning your trip, you will find both perspectives here.
The Half-Timbered Church and the History of the Ironworks
The single-nave half-timbered church with galleries was created by converting a former ironworks storehouse dating from 1767. A tower was added in 1819, and it houses two bells from a Berlin bell foundry. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with one main nave; galleries are raised walkways inside the building. The building’s different features and uses bring its history to life: a storehouse became a church, and the tower was added later. The former ironworks produced wire, nails, and bar iron.
A glacial erratic placed in the square in front of the church in 2005 commemorates the former ironworks. It bears a cast of a plaque depicting a model of the first German steam engine. Here, the history of the church and Santoczno’s industrial heritage come together. Other historical traces include the ruins of a former watermill and the ruins of a former ironworks.
Other Historic Buildings and Memorial Sites
A former Neoclassical parsonage dating from the 19th century was extended with a wing in the 20th century and has a half-hipped roof. This roof style combines sloping roof planes with shortened hip sections at the gable ends. Near the bridge and waterfall on the Santoczna River, there is also a small lapidarium made up of gravestones from a former German cemetery. A lapidarium is a collection of stone works or stone fragments. The church, parsonage, lapidarium, and ruins represent different aspects of local history and can each appeal to a different historical interest.
