Ośno Lubuskie combines historic urban architecture with Lake Reczynek and marked routes through the town. When choosing a hotel, you can consider whether you are mainly interested in the medieval fortifications and religious buildings, or whether you would also like to include the lake and natural surroundings in your travel plans.

City Walls and Old Town

The almost completely preserved ring of granite stones and bricks forms the main part of Ośno Lubuskie’s medieval fortification system. The walls are up to six metres high. Brick crenellations topped them and could be reached via walkways on the inside; loopholes were positioned at the level of these walkways.

The surviving structures include two round towers, three full-height rectangular half-towers, including their roofs, and seven rectangular half-towers without roofs. There are also seven gates. The different tower shapes and the gates give the ring of fortifications a clearly articulated form, while, as a whole, it forms the main part of the medieval complex.

Around the turn of the 20th century, promenades were laid out around the walls, paved and planted with two rows of lime trees. This places the medieval defensive function alongside a later design of the surrounding area.

Church, Town Hall and Museum

The Church of St. James occupies a central position in the layout of the old town: it stands on a small hill, with the town hall adjoining it to the east. The church is considered an especially valuable and imposing example of Gothic architecture, and its form is well preserved. Among the most valuable items inside are a Mannerist high altar, a pulpit and a baptismal font.

The restored town hall is one of the town’s most valuable monuments and an important part of its local cultural heritage. The Muzeum Ziemi Torzymskiej is housed in the historic town hall. If you are planning to visit the museum, check access in advance.

St Gertrude’s Chapel

St Gertrude’s Chapel stands on a hill northwest of the old town. It was built around the middle of the 15th century on the site of an older half-timbered building. The small brick building has a single-nave, single-space hall and an eastern end closed on three sides. The description “single-nave and single-space” refers to a single hall; the eastern end is another distinctive feature of the building. Compared with the imposing Church of St. James, the chapel is the smaller religious building.

Lake Reczynek and Routes Through the Town

Lake Reczynek lies in the north of Ośno Lubuskie, within the town limits, and is a municipal bathing area. As seasonal operations may change, check the current conditions before your visit. Nearby are a recreation centre with water-sports equipment rental, a campsite, a small sports field and a playground; these facilities may also change seasonally. If you are planning to rent a kayak or pedal boat, check in advance whether the service is currently operating.

Marked walking and cycling routes run through Ośno Lubuskie and are suitable for recreation and exploring the natural surroundings. When planning your trip, you can choose between a walk and a bike ride without committing to a particular duration or route. Check the conditions on the relevant routes before your trip.
