Żagań: Discover the Monastery, History and Trails
Accommodation in Żagań
Żagań brings together monastic history and museum collections with historic routes through the city and park. If you’re looking for a hotel in Żagań, you can plan your stay around the topics that interest you: the former Augustinian monastery, the history of prisoners of war, or trails to historic sites and through parkland.
Monastery Complex and Library
The former Augustinian monastery complex in Żagań was granted the status of a Pomnik Historii, a Polish Historic Monument, in 2011. The complex includes the monastery library, which was one of the most famous libraries in Silesia from the 15th century onwards. It has been preserved almost entirely intact and is known for the remarkable acoustics of its so-called Whispering Vault.
It is worth distinguishing between the two aspects: the monument status applies to the monastery complex, while the historic library stands out for its state of preservation and the Whispering Vault. This places a protected ensemble alongside a distinctive architectural feature, without attributing the award to the library alone.
Museum and Remembrance of Prisoners of War
The Muzeum Obozów Jenieckich in Żagań displays rescued documents about Stalag and the postwar trials of perpetrators. The collection also includes photographs and memories of prisoners of war, as well as items they used in daily life and handicrafts made in the camp. It therefore encompasses documents and visual materials, as well as personal memories and objects from everyday life in the camp. These different exhibits offer several tangible ways to engage with the subject.
One route connects directly to the museum site: the Szlak wielkiej ucieczki (Great Escape Trail) is a circular route that starts and ends on the grounds of the Muzeum Obozów Jenieckich. Its shared starting and ending point makes the loop a clear feature to consider when planning your route.
Historic Sites and Park Trails
The Route of Princess Dorota’s Żagań Heritage leads to historic sites connected with the life and history of Dorota de Talleyrand-Périgord. Stops include the castle and park complex, with the ducal palace and landscape park; the former administrative building of the princess; and the Dom Wdowi on Plac Słowiański. Other destinations include the tower of the former Protestant church, the former Augustinian monastery complex, the Town Hall tower on Rynek, and the St. Dorothy Hospital complex. The route thus links various buildings and places associated with the life and history of the princess.
The Ścieżka „Park Słowiański“ trail passes through a city park with a variety of woodland habitats, park ponds, the Bóbr River and the archaeological site of „Gród Chrobry“. The park also has a clearing, a fire pit, benches and a toilet. Its natural and park features are presented alongside an archaeological site.
Another option is the 3 km tourist route „Kamienne Ślady Przeszłości“. It starts at the Domku Portiera, now the Centrum Informacji Turystycznej w Żaganiu at the park entrance. From there, it passes the Domku Inspektora Parku and continues through Zacisze Doroty, Domek Wędkarski, Miejsce Marii and Wyspa Marii to the former Oranżeria nad Bobrem and other places connected with the history of the ducal park. This makes the difference between the routes clear: „Kamienne Ślady Przeszłości“ has a stated length and a sequence of named places, while the trail through Park Słowiański is described in terms of woodland habitats, ponds, the river and an archaeological site.
The tower of the former Protestant church is also one of the historic sites mentioned. It was restored in 2004 and now serves as an observation tower offering panoramic views of the city. As a stop on the Route of Princess Dorota’s Żagań Heritage, it connects a historic site with views across Żagań.
