Lipski: Wisła Landscape, Birdlife and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Lipski
The Wisła Valley, its birdlife and historic buildings shape Lipski County. The valley brings together a broad river landscape and places steeped in history. There are also waymarked trails that vary in length and route. So when planning your trip, it helps to ask a simple question: would you like to focus on nature and outdoor activities, or on churches, ruins and other cultural sites?
The Wisła Valley and Nature
The Wisła Valley in Lipski County features a wide riverbed with numerous islands and sandbanks. The landscape stretches across the municipalities of Chotcza and Solec. More than 320 bird species have been recorded throughout the Wisła Valley. Around Chotcza and Solec, about 40 species of waterbirds and wetland birds breed. These figures relate to different areas and groups of birds: the diversity of species throughout the valley and the breeding birds of wetlands in the immediate surroundings.
The Wisła Valley in Lipski County includes Natura 2000 sites of international importance for the conservation of biodiversity. The protected areas also encompass different aspects of the landscape: the Solec nad Wisłą Landscape Protection Area was established by an ordinance of the Masovian Voivode on April 19, 2002. A reserve near Sadkowice, close to Solec nad Wisłą, protects steppe vegetation.
Those interested in fishing will find opportunities along the Iłżanka, Krępianka, Wisła and Kamienna rivers, as well as at standing bodies of water in Lipski County.
Walking and Cycling Trails
A waymarked green trail follows the Krępianka through fields and woodland. At 11 kilometres long, it connects Lipsko with Solec nad Wisłą. The red Rzeczniów–Sienno trail is a circular route that runs via Kochanówka, Wólka Modrzejowa, Grabowiec, Podkońce, Płósy and Rzechów before returning to Rzeczniów; it is 39 kilometres long. At 11 kilometres, the green trail is considerably shorter than the 39-kilometre red loop.
The “Szlak Żółwia i dinozaura” (Turtle and Dinosaur Trail) also runs through Lipski County. These different routes offer several ways to explore the region on foot or by bike: the green trail connects two named places along the Krępianka, the red trail forms a loop, and the “Szlak Żółwia i dinozaura” runs through Lipski County.
Castle Ruins and Historic Buildings
Solec nad Wisłą is home to medieval castle ruins dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. They are the remains of a border fortress built by King Casimir the Great. Sections of walls and foundations remain, along with traces of a cylindrical tower. The ruins are overgrown and unfenced; this is part of their character on site.
Also in Solec nad Wisłą is the 16th-century Church of St. Barbara. It is considered one of the oldest wooden monuments in Masovia. Another historic building is the 17th-century Reformed Franciscan monastery complex. In Sienno, the Church of St. Zygmunt dates from the 15th century; a foundation plaque from 1442 is embedded in its walls.
The cultural heritage of Lipski County also includes a synagogue in the municipality of Ciepielów, listed as a notable cultural heritage site. The village museum in Lipa Miklas is among the listed attractions of Lipski County and is located in the municipality of Lipsko. These places add further cultural sites in the region to a visit to the historic buildings in Solec nad Wisłą and Sienno.
Regional Orientation and Cultural Programme
Lipski County extends across the Radom Hills, the Opatów Upland and the Kozienice Basin. The Wisła Valley separates it from the Lublin Upland by a high escarpment. Located between Kazimierz Dolny, Janowiec and Bałtów, Lipski County is considered a starting point for walking and cycling tours.
Lipsko is the administrative centre of Lipski County. The town lies in the Krępianka Valley at the junction of National Road 79, between Warsaw and Sandomierz, and Voivodeship Road 747, between Iłża and Solec nad Wisłą. This helps you place Lipsko within the regional road network; road conditions and traffic may change.
The Lipskie Centrum Kultury is a municipal cultural institution of the town and municipality of Lipsko. Its programme includes concerts, festivals, competitions, exhibitions and author events, among other things. As the programme changes, check the specific event dates for your travel period.
When choosing a hotel, you can start by deciding which places and activities you would like to shape your stay: the river landscape and trails, or the historic buildings in Solec nad Wisłą, Sienno and other municipalities. Choose a hotel location based on these travel interests and compare the places relevant to your planned visits.
