Otwock offers several distinct highlights for a trip: the local Świdermajer wooden architecture, the city park and trails through the landscape along the Świder. The city is in central Poland, in the Masovian Voivodeship and Otwock County, about 25 kilometres southeast of Warsaw. Otwock lies between the pine forests of the Masovian Landscape Park and on the left bank of the Świder, near its confluence with the Vistula.

Getting to Otwock and finding your way around

Otwock’s historic railway station in the city centre was built around 1910 and has served for years as the main hub of local transport. Electric trains operated by Szybka Kolej Miejska and Koleje Mazowieckie run from Otwock, Świder and Śródborów stations to Warsaw, Pilawa and Dęblin seven days a week. Timetables and connections may change, so check the current timetable before travelling. The station is also a notable starting point from which to see how the city has developed: four main Velo Otwock cycling routes begin in the centre at the station.

City park and cultural venues

The city park in the centre is a public recreational space and a tourist attraction with recreational, aesthetic and health benefits. It covers approximately 8.1 hectares and surrounds the former casino, which now houses the K. I. Gałczyński General Secondary School. A monument to Marshal Józef Piłsudski stands along the park’s main axis. There is also a graduation tower for brine inhalation. Its presence and use are a distinct aspect of the park, separate from its seasonal events: numerous concerts and art events take place on an open-air stage, with a programme that varies by season.

Świdermajer and the city’s history

Świdermajer is a distinctive local architectural style that emerged during Otwock’s brief but intense development around the turn of the 20th century. Otwock’s wooden architecture and that of its surroundings is considered exceptional within the Masovian region. It developed within a narrowly defined area along the Nadwiślańska Railway, with Otwock as its centre. The Szlak Willi Otwockich (Otwock Villas Trail) focuses on the part of present-day Otwock that developed from the 1880s until the outbreak of the Second World War. The architecture and the historical period are therefore connected, but emphasise different things: the style emerged around the turn of the century, while the period of development described continued until the years preceding the Second World War.

Cycling routes and the landscape along the Świder

Velo Otwock comprises five cycling routes: Nadświdrzański, Letniskowy, Kolejowy, Sosnowy and Alpejski. The combined length of these five routes in Otwock is stated to be almost 70 kilometres. The number of main routes at the station and the number of named routes describe different aspects of the network: four main cycling routes start in the centre, while Velo Otwock comprises five routes. The routes run along dune hills and the meanders of the Świder. The landscape along the routes also includes sandy slopes, meadows, pine forests and dense riverside forests. Another way to take in the river landscape is the Świderski Szlak Wilegiatury Andriollego (Andriolli’s Świder Leisure Trail): it follows the riverbank for long stretches and is suitable for both walkers and cyclists.

Riverside recreation and the museum

Otwocka Plaża Miejska (Otwock City Beach) is on the bank of the Świder and is considered a place for recreation. It has a volleyball and beach volleyball court, as well as a pirate-themed playground for children. Facilities and access may change; check the latest conditions before planning a visit. In 1996, the Muzeum Ziemi Otwockiej (Otwock Land Museum) moved to its current villa on the edge of Soplicowo. Its collection includes several thousand exhibits, from Palaeolithic finds to objects from recent years. The museum is not receiving visitors while renovation and reorganisation work is ongoing. Before planning a visit, check the official visitor information for updates about reopening.
