Palace and Museum at the Heart of the Town

At the center of Otwock Wielki is a palace and park complex with a three-storey late Baroque palace. Tylman z Gameren designed the building; it was built between 1693 and 1703. The palace is open to everyone. It houses the Muzeum Wnętrz, bringing architectural history and a museum collection together in one place.

History and Interiors

The palace’s history also includes its guests: the Bieliński couple welcomed King Jan III Sobieski and Augustus II the Strong to Otwock Wielki. These names add the story of the palace’s receptions to the history of the building itself.

Wall paintings have been preserved in the former private rooms. Their subjects range from ancient ruins and a landscape to a lively shore with ships, goods and people. Different visual worlds come together here, with architecture and nature alongside scenes by the water. The frescoes date from around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, close to the time when the palace was built.

Collections and Music

The Muzeum Wnętrz displays historical furniture and other furnishings from the Baroque to the Biedermeier period. The collection also includes old musical instruments and mementos of Ignacy Jan Paderewski. This chronological range of furniture and furnishings is complemented by musical objects and personal mementos. The collection details on display may change over time.

One musical object described in particular is in the ballroom: a concert grand piano made by Steinway and Sons in 1925, which belonged to Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Its year of manufacture and former ownership give the instrument a special connection to the museum’s mementos of Paderewski. Dating from 1925, the piano is not contemporary with the construction of the late Baroque palace.

Two Rococo armchairs are also part of the palace’s furnishings. Their upholstery depicts scenes from the fables of Jean La Fontaine. While the concert grand piano brings the musical side of the collection to life, the armchairs combine furniture design with literary themes.

Summer Programme and Palace Café

Music is not only part of the collection: every year, free classical music concerts are held in the park of the palace and park complex at 5 pm on Sundays in July and August. This recurring summer programme adds a specific event to a museum visit. Check the concert dates before your visit so you can plan your stay accordingly.

The palace café serves cakes, and you can also view works by artists from the region there. If you plan to visit the café, check its current opening hours in advance.
