Biskupice brings together archaeological traces from several periods, memorial sites, a wayside chapel and a figure of the Virgin Mary. These clearly distinct themes can help you plan a visit: the archaeological site represents settlement and craftsmanship, while the memorials represent remembrance and religious practice. Roads and bus services are also part of planning your trip.

Archaeological traces from several periods

Archaeological site 1 in Biskupice is classified as a settlement from the late La Tène period and the Roman Imperial period. Traces of the Trzciniec culture have also been found. Its chronological classification therefore extends beyond a single cultural attribution; the site has several archaeological connections rather than representing just one period.

An excavation covering 648 m² uncovered 173 features: 31 bloomery furnaces, 14 hearths, a well and two pit houses. A bloomery furnace was used to smelt iron; alongside its chronological classification, the types of features give the site a tangible material dimension. A pit house is a structure partially dug into the ground. One of two neighboring pit houses served as an amber workshop. There, 2.5 kg of small amber fragments and broken pieces of beads were found. Thus, a specific theme of craftsmanship accompanies the history of settlement.

Memorial sites and religious symbols

A burial mound in Biskupice contains a mass grave of German and Russian soldiers who died in the battle in October 1914. The mound is listed in the municipal register of monuments. Alongside the archaeological periods, it therefore represents a precisely dated connection to the First World War; the burial mound can be distinguished from archaeological site 1, although both are part of the area's history.

A wayside chapel with a cross and a commemorative plaque stands on Road 720, opposite house number 26. The steel cross is considered an example of artistic metalwork. Another religious site is the wayside statue of the Virgin Mary at the junction of Road 720 and the road to Koszajec (ul. Długa). It stands on a clinker-brick pedestal, is protected by a glass display case and is enclosed by a wooden fence. Mary is depicted standing on a globe, with her head slightly tilted and her hands outstretched; she wears a dress, mantle and veil. The chapel and statue differ in both location and design.

River, pilgrimages and getting there

The Zimna Woda River flows through Biskupice, adding a landscape feature to the description of the area. Pilgrimages to the Shrine of Our Lady, Help of the Faithful and Primate, in Rokitno also pass through the village. If you want to plan your trip around a particular pilgrimage, check the dates in advance.

Biskupice can be reached via Voivodeship Road 720 and county road 3110W from Biskupice to Koszajec; the village is also near the A2 motorway. Bus services are also available. For a specific journey, check current traffic conditions and timetables.

Construction of an approximately 470 m-long pedestrian and cycle path along Voivodeship Road 720 was planned. The proposed route was to run from the viaduct over the A2 to a side road toward Kotowice and MOP BrwinĂłw, improving tourist access to the First World War burial mound. If you plan to include this proposed route in your itinerary, check current infrastructure conditions before traveling.

For trip planning, the themes can be distinguished as follows: the archaeological site offers connections to settlement and craftsmanship, the burial mound to the First World War, and the wayside chapel and the figure of the Virgin Mary to local religious landmarks. The information about roads and bus services concerns getting there; the pedestrian and cycle path remains a separate planned construction project.
