Siedlce: Nature, Garden Art and History
Accommodation in Siedlce
Stawy Siedleckie stands for the protection of diverse habitats; Park Aleksandria combines garden art with leisure and cultural events. The area also offers a nature trail, historic architecture and an important work of art. When planning your trip to Siedlce, it is worth deciding in advance what you want to focus on: nature, park history or culture can each be specifically incorporated into your stay.
Nature and Trails in Siedlce
Stawy Siedleckie is a 224-hectare faunal nature reserve established in 2008. The complex consists of eleven ponds separated from one another by dams. It protects breeding habitats as well as feeding and resting places for rare bird species, along with habitats for rare protected plant and invertebrate species. For visitors interested in nature, the protection of habitats is therefore as important as the water itself.
The Sekuła nature and forest trail offers another way to experience nature. The 2.1-kilometre circular trail has eight information boards about how the forest ecosystem works. The boards give the trail a clear nature-study focus and make it a distinct option when planning an outing.
The Zielone Siedlce cycle route has a different focus: it connects the areas around the reservoir with the Dolina Muchawki ecological landscape feature, the Sekuła forest and its nature and educational trail, and the Siedlce Błonia. This offers two distinct formats: a single circular trail with explanatory boards, and a cycle route linking several named natural areas. When planning, consider whether you would rather focus on the forest ecosystem along a themed trail or visit several areas along a cycle route.
Park History and Culture
Park Aleksandria was first laid out in the first half of the 18th century as an Italian-style garden. During the time of Princess Aleksandra Ogińska, it was redesigned in the sentimental style based on a plan by Franciszek Salezy Sarnowski. The park is used for relaxation and leisure and is also a venue for cultural and artistic events. The playground for the youngest visitors and families is divided into areas for children of different ages; there is also an outdoor fitness trail. If an event is important to your plans, check the dates in advance.
The Pałac Ogińskich adds to Siedlce’s architectural history: Kazimierz Czartoryski had it built before 1730; Aleksandra Ogińska had it extensively remodelled in the Neoclassical style in 1779–1781. At the Muzeum Diecezjalne, the focus is on a work of art: the museum’s most valuable exhibit is El Greco’s painting “The Ecstasy of Saint Francis.” El Greco lived from 1541 to 1614.
