Całownia and the Gmina Szczutowo

Całownia is a village in the Masovian Voivodeship, in Sierpc County and the Gmina Szczutowo. The village has the status of a sołectwo. The lakes, trails and historic buildings in the gmina offer a range of themes to consider when planning a trip.

Lakes and seasonal recreation

The Jezioro Szczutowskie Nature and Landscape Complex covers 250.9 hectares. Jezioro Szczutowskie itself is glacial in origin and covers around 100 hectares. These two figures refer to different areas: 250.9 hectares for the complex and around 100 hectares for the lake. Its varied shoreline, forests and recreational areas shape the landscape. The lake is considered scenic and relatively unspoiled. It is used for fishing, swimming and water sports.

Jezioro Urszulewskie is the largest body of water in the Gmina Szczutowo and lies on the border between the Masovian and Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeships. Its recreational uses vary by season: in summer, the lake serves as a swimming spot and a hub for water recreation, while in winter it attracts ice anglers. Several larger and smaller swimming areas are located along its scenic shoreline; they may be seasonal. A large beach is located by the recreational complex in Szczutowo, and it too may operate seasonally. If swimming is important to your trip plans, check in advance which options are available during your intended travel dates.

Hiking and cycling trails

The forests and meadows around Jezioro Urszulewskie support hiking and cycling tourism. Two named hiking trails run through the Gmina Szczutowo: the green Szlak im. Bartosza Paprockiego and the black Szlak im. Rodu Sieprskich. Both run between Sierpc and Szczutowo. They therefore share the same stated endpoints but differ in name and color. There are also cycling routes and recreational corridors in the lake area. The region thus offers both named hiking routes and paths and corridors for cycling tourism.

Churches and memorial sites

Historic buildings in the gmina include churches in Karlewo and Gójsk. In Karlewo, the wooden subsidiary church of Saint Lawrence, dating from 1720, is a listed historic monument. In Gójsk stands the listed parish Church of the Sacred Heart, built between 1903 and 1906. The two churches offer specific historical points of reference from different centuries, and their dates of construction should not be confused.

The cultural character of the gmina also includes numerous wayside chapels, roadside crosses and memorial sites. The memorials honor residents who fought to defend their homeland. Interest in local history thus extends beyond church buildings to places of remembrance.
